Dis Pater: The Wrap-Up

The Previous Parts are no doubt here, taking advantage of the fact I'm not home and sucking up my booze and abusing Big Bertha, the world's only gas-powered vibrator...or so I was assured.

This is the last bit of Dis Pater...I figured I'd post this now while I have the chance...please forgive boo-booos and such, I'm doing this crouched over in the dark with the laptop on my knees praying the Fam doesn't wake up...I suck so much. Will explain all later.

The helicopter touched down, wind from the rotors swept them where they stood. The coffin was swiftly unloaded from the back of the hearse parked on the landing pad and into the helicopter as one of the men talked to Lex. Lucas stared up at the bright blue sky, tracking a hawk floating on an updraft. He didn’t look at Lex, he didn’t watch the coffin being loaded, he didn’t look at the men. It might not be happening for all the interest he paid.

With the coffin safely stowed on board and business completed, the man shook hands with Lex, that two handed ‘I feel your pain’ squeeze that made Lex’s stomach flip and he had to fight to smother the snarl that tried to surface. It was over--he wanted them gone as quickly as possible.

Lex and Lucas stepped back as the helicopter rose into the air. Black silhouettes of birds wheeled high in the clouds, like escorts to the helicopter as their father’s body began its last journey back to Metropolis.

Lex turned to Lucas and his eyes were red. “That’s it, let’s go. You’re driving,” he said. his voice broke and he turned away from Lucas to pull himself together.
Lucas made a little sound of sympathy and threw an arm around Lex’s shoulders. “You’ll be happy—as soon as things are back to normal, you’ll see. Everything will finally make sense to you.” He cradled Lex’s head and kissed him. “You will see.”

Lex nodded and walked to the car, head bent and surreptitiously wiping his mouth. He climbed in and sat waiting for Lucas.

Black clouds raced towards them as the car rolled down the drive, stone crunching under the tires with a sound like bones breaking and Lex leaned his head back to watch the Castle disappear in the distance. Lucas caught Lex looking back.

“It’s on the market,” he said, “We won’t be back here again. There’s no need.”

“But, the plant…” Lex began.

“No,” Lucas shook his head. “The plant, the farms, all going—we’re moving in a different direction. A more profitable direction, one that’s better for the both of us.”

“I see,” Lex said. He watched the Castle until it was out of sight. He had the feeling whatever was left of happiness in his life he’d lost there

They raced past fields of corn and wheat, past stands of sunflowers moving stiffly in the slight breeze. The car was silent; each of them caught up in their own thoughts, until they began to run along the river, headed to the bridge where Lex had a feeling everything should have changed….

A figure stood on the bridge all alone, head turned down towards the water. Lucas chuckled. “Well, look who it is.”

Lucas slowed as they ran over the bridge and they passed Clark at a crawl. Lex leaned his head against the window and gazed at Clark. He felt loss and longing in every cell of his body.

Clark looked back into the car windows, and Lex jerked back. Clark’s face twisted with loathing. He made eye contact with Lex and in that brief moment, he felt as though Clark looked through him, into him, into his heart and soul…passed judgment on him and declared him less than human. Hate flared in his eyes, forcing Lex to look away from the revulsion, the accusation burning in them-- he swore he could feel Clark’s hatred of them tear at his heart like fangs.

Lucas seemed oblivious to what passed between Lex and Clark. He grinned and held his hand up to his ear, mimed speaking on a phone. ‘Call me’, he mouthed and blew him a kiss. He only laughed when Clark turned bright red with fury and took an involuntary step toward the slow moving car. One step, another and Lucas sped up, leaving Clark behind them on the bridge.

Lex felt as if he were drowning in tears he couldn’t shed. He wanted to scream, he wanted to slap Lucas, who laughed and laughed as they drove on over the bridge, and not long after past the sign….

The towers of Metropolis rose in the distance and sunlight broke through the clouds, gilding the city a warm gold with the late afternoon light. Blue and gold and rose clouds dashed across the sky and even at this hour some lights glittered in the stone spires. Metropolis looked new and fresh from this vantage point, it looked untouched and full of promise, light and airy as if any moment it would float away into the stars. It was beautiful, and full of life—perfect at this distance. It would take time to discover its sores, the pockmarks under its pure façade.

They soared towards Metropolis, tires flying over the road, and heavy silence filling the car until Lucas asked Lex if he loved him.

“Of course,” he said, his voice flat and distant as he stared at the city growing on the horizon. Lucas smiled and reminded him that they’d never be alone again, and Lex said, “I know.”

Lucas asked him if he was happy and when Lex laughed, he laughed too, and squeezed his knee and drove faster and faster towards Metropolis.
