Oh, I really do enjoy this story so much! I say that every time, but it bears repeating, sweetie. Kal's becoming more and more a real character, and reading about how Lex is dealing with that is infinitely intriguing. I keep trying to think up "what" exactly Kal is, but half the fun is always your surprise ending.
And of course, it hadn't lasted, and it hadn’t been enough for him and Lex regretted bitterly what his twenty-two year old self had been willing to throw away.
I had to read this over a few times. I do that with my favorite lines in my favorite stories, and like with those I got that gut-clench of regret here. Man, I hope this one has a happy ending. :( That memory's a killer, and Kal really shows his growth (and early Clark's perseverance) with this one:
"You regretted it the minute it happened, and blamed yourself before the judges did. You think you don't care but you do."
