What cheese goes best with this whine...?

Say there was a story someone was writing...unh, a friend of mine yeah, that's right...and say at one point the story will touch on the fact that the characters are firemen--not a big part of the story mind you, it's mostly about people talking and not that much action at all, though one of the characters dies in the performance of duty but it's pretty much an SpN death, you know what I mean, anyway...how much research do I does my friend have to do? Not much, right, they can watch a youtube or two, right, maybe skim a wikipedia article, right?

Grrrrr! Ever have a great idea and then find out it's just a little bit outside of your abilities? Ack. I usually find that out when I'm half-way through a story so this is an improvement...even though suddenly dangling off a cliff does make for some real wild and sometimes crazily interesting fics, hah! That moment of panic when you realize that the fic's too big or too involved, but you push on anyway and hope for the best. Sometimes it's lots of fun, sometimes it just makes you weep in the shower where no one can hear you and you can blame the shampoo for red eyes. *sniff*

Okay, whine over, Imma pull up my granny panties and marshal on. There's gonna be some kind of story posting in this spot soon, damn it!! I has spoken!

The cheese of hugs goes well with whine I'm told lol. *hug* I have no real advice but I'm willing to sit here and listen and provide hugs while you use your greatness to figure this out lol.

How are you so nice to me? *HUGS*

Christ, what you just described has been the downfall of so many of my fics that it's embarrassing. I can't write in certain fandoms because I just don't "get" crucial aspects of that particular world. Example: Star Trek. Me not science-y enough! Don't get it! Also, anything with cars, cops, computers, war, Marvel, history. . .

Yeah, so, you know what? You fucking write what you want to and research however much you feel is necessary, and we'll just give you a pass because we're all awesome like that. You're awesome, and I'm awesome, and the folks who read and enjoy your writing are awesome, and I'm also really fucking tired right now, but my point still stands. I think. What?

Granny-panty-posting is the best! *headdesk*

*cookie? passes plate*

Right? I can fake a lot of stuff, but some things cannot be faked!

I picked a hard one anyway, it's that J2 Frequency movie-based fic that I've been working on and off. You know, I think what I'll do is write all the confusing time travelish parts first, than the fireman bits and then weave the other stuff around it. So then it becomes a WeeBoys-High School-College-Firefighter-Pining Boys Gay Jared-Straightish Jensen-All the Cliches- type of fic--Ha-ha! *snatches cookie*

Some peeps are probably going to tell you that the amount of research that needs doing is proportional to how much you- um, your friend, cares about accuracy, which is somewhat true, but the really important question is this: How many firemen/family members of firemen/ friends of firemen/people who are otherwise experts on firemen related things are going to be reading this fic? Because these are the only people who are going to notice if the fic is riddled with mistakes. So if twenty percent of the reading demographic are firemen aficionados then you better get on the research. *nods*

Yes. I have six such fics on my hard drive staring me down as we speak and I'm trying to figure out which one would be the least terrifying to work on.

Such a good point. Okay, I give myself permission to research enough that *I* feel comfortable, and then fake the rest. Because I always research my ass off and wander hither and yon and end up in the hinterlands, wondering how I got there and full of tasty and useless knowledge story wise...

OH, man. Hello.

Of course, i tend to have some itty-bitty, one-line throwaway *thing* that i end up spending two days on research, being all crazy and obsessive.

So, you know...cuts both ways.

I say - watch a few episodes of 'Rescue Me' and you're all good.
*smooch*

*happysigh*

I don't just love you because you tell me what I want to hear...*grin*

Of course, I also count on you to let me know when I'm being lazy. ;)

Clearly, you should watch the first couple seasons of Rescue Me. For research.

Hah! I wondered if my extensive knowledge of firefighting gleaned from Rescue Me would ever come in handy--now it will!

*GGG*

I thought it was chocolate that went with this particular whine...

I have this problem regularly but it's not details that bother me since I figure a little research...that ability to B.S. things...

It's emotional details that throw me and have me talking myself out of writing stories. I have a couple ideas I'd LOVE to write but I talk myself out of them because I don't think I can portray the emotional side of it.

If you love the story, write it anyway even if you don't have all the details. Usually the plot bunnies that grab you by the throat and give you a good shake re the best ones.

[identity profile] roxymissrose.livejournal.com 2012-09-15 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
I'm going to dive into it, give it a shot. One way or another, it's got to be settled. ;)

It's funny that you say that about emotion--sometimes I think my stories are nothing but that--the barest veneer of plot over a lot of angsting, ha!

[identity profile] selinamoonfire.livejournal.com 2012-09-15 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
Usually I'm okay with the emotional side but a couple of my latest ideas have to deal with so much angst that I'm like "I don't even know where to start with this..." oO

And then I go hide and write some fluff that never gets posted or the crack that I'm hoping WILL get posted. XD

[identity profile] firesign10.livejournal.com 2012-09-14 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I have total faith in your abilities, bb!! And I hera ya on the story telling! Hoping to post a part 1 of a possibly 3-parter soon, while the Big Big Bang is underway for November :-D

[identity profile] roxymissrose.livejournal.com 2012-09-15 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, coolness! I look forward to seeing it! Who knows, maybe I'll be posting something too. ;)
