This is how I do it

I don't post any fic because once a week I reread my story and change a word. Maybe two. And then it sits again for another week. In my mind I'm up to chapter 40. In reality, I'm up to half a chapter. But it's half a chapter of *very* good words...interspersed with many mediocre ones.

I will then give you the equivalent of a DVD commentary on that snippet--what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what’s going on in the characters' heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you’d expect to find on a DVD commentary track.

I always wonder when authors say give me a snippet and I'll tell you everything about writing it how the hell they remember. I could never do it. So, more power to you!

With me, my memory of writing most of my stuff is kind of non-informative. rednihilist's stuff is so damn smart--she doesn't write anything that's not essential to the story and it's interesting to see how she came to each scene. Me, it's mostly a page full of happy accidents and me going "oh yeah...I meant that."

LOL, me too. Have you ever seen the Far Side cartoon ( I think) where the mathematician has this ridiculously complex equation on the board and some where in the middle is "and then a miracle occurred" with the equation going on for some time after? That's how my writing is. Someone will point out something...like in my Springfling fic someone said they like the recurring theme of the mirrors and until they said it I didn't even realize it was there, it was so not on purpose. :)
