"Lucy"

Listen, I was a military dependent(*not* an army brat) for 18 years--I was friends with officer's kids, and no one--*no* one ever referred to their pop by their rank. Ever. EVER.
Granted, it was during the Vietnam era and stuff was different then but still--"THe General." God-- I just wanted to smack the crap out of her every time she said that. I liked everything else though, logic bombs and all. Silly episode yes, but just too pretty to be mad at.

Military child as well

My father started out as an NCO and ended up as a Major. When he acheived his highest rank, we always referred to him as Major Dad -- not because of the rank, but because of an Erma Bombeck piece describing a family trip which was hilarious and the father in it (known as Major Dad) fit my father to a T.

So it does happen. Not often, but it does happen.

Hah! Okay, generalizations are bad! I was talking about this to a friend of mind and she had the same reaction I did, but I wonder could it have been the times?
And now, I want to know everything about that story 'cause it sounds like it must be very good! :)
