Which Star Trek book are we going to read ladies? *cracks knuckles, stocks up coffee*

Fate of the Phoenix?

I have a lot of them electronically, and can work on getting others somehow if I don't have them.

We might want to start after you finish that one since it's a sequel. You seem to read pretty fast and I'm going to have to dig through some boxes to see if I can find my copies - although I too have a fair amount electonically. They all got packed up when we had to make room for the twins.

You pick! I also don't mind rereading any of the ones I've read already. Or maybe that Vulcan Academy one you mentioned. I seem to have it electronically...

Oi vey! Well, my three all time favorites are Uhura's Song, Crisis on Centaurus, and Wounded Sky. garryowen hasn't read any of those yet, although I know she just started another one or is about to. What are your favorites? It doesn't really matter to me too much - I liked almost all of them (although some more than others or course) and I own them all. So a lot of the ones we read will depend on what you can get your hands on.

I just started Wounded Sky! Because I had it on the bus. But I can slow down and wait for y'all. It's really beautiful so far. I heart Diane Duane and her planet/star fetish. LOL.

Highly variable. Totally depends on how my week's going and what form the novel's in. I'm slower w/ electronic.

Have you got a copy of Wounded Sky?

How should we do this? Do you just want to make a post and we can comment as we notice awesome things?

I think twins has 2 dig hers out of a box somewhere, but, yeah. Awesomeness. I'm ready whenever she is. I feel so nerdy. Heh.

I have that Wounded Sky on my laptop. I'm ready to go. Ya'll are evil for dragging me back into these. *suffer suffer*

Now I'm really going to need some ST icons.

We've been discussing how to best go about it here on your DW page. It's all further down. Any opinions or different ideas?

Okay, Roxy has Wounded Sky. Let's do it! I would love to talk about that one b/c there's lots of science I don't understand! Let us know when you dig it up.

I have Wounded Sky downloaded onto my laptop! We can commence reading whenever. I've never done anything like this before, so how should we manage it? Should we say that we'll read to a certain point in a few days to a week and then talk about what I've read - emailing each other with questions and observations until we all get to the same point before we continue further. Or just read until we finish, whoever finishes first waiting until the others catch up? Or we could start a community and communicate there - even invite others on our flists to join us, or just do it for the three of us. We could make a post in regards to the title and then we could each respond to the post as we read the book.

I know I'm a pretty damn fast reader, but don't have the time I used to, to just sit down and read a book from cover to cover in a couple of hours.

Oh, yeah, we don't want to spoil each other. Hm. So, yeah, either we all finish before discussing, or agree not to discuss things beyond a certain chapter. Whatever y'all prefer.

I think a journal entry is easiest so we can all see comments and such. Emails might get confusing? I guess DW might not notify everyone of a comment, but we could easily bookmark the entry... I dunno. Whatever y'all think is easiest and most efficient. I also told [personal profile] from because she's been reading, but not sure if she'll join in.

I'm not worried about spoilers, since I've read all of the original series of novels multiple times. It also sounds like Roxy has read them.

The only reasons I suggested a community is because they're easy to set up (in Lj anyway, I'm not sure about DW, although I have some invite codes left, so maybe I could do it), and we wouldn't have to search through whomever's journal looking for the correct post. We all post several times a week. We should get Roxy's take on it too. Maybe she has a different idea - she's a good idea/problem solving person.

I think there might be an lj comm...or maybe it was just a TOS-watching comm. I can't remember. But we can start one on DW. It should be easy. I have codes, too. I reeeeeaaaally wish I had a kindle, now, b/c I could so easily highlight things, and make notes. Poo. Maybe when my paycheck starts again in the fall.

It does look easy to start a community. I just checked it out. If Roxy agrees then I can start one up, you can both join so I can add you as moderators, and then we invite others to join us if we want them to grow. Just a thought. I'm not wed to the idea or anything and am quite willing to go along with what you and Roxy want to do. I'm easy (at least about this).

Is everyone able to read this thread? *waves* Hey! I've already read Wounded Sky and only last month. Next time, though, because this sounds really fun.

Well, it isn't my thread, but I'd say the more the merrier. It's too bad you read the one we picked already, but it is an awesome story isn't it? I don't want to spoil garryown, in case she reads this, but I always liked their "walk" and what the spider winds up creating. Duane is such a talented writer.

Your RL stuff sounds awesome. What fun! We actually just finished Wounded Sky and have been remarking for the last few posts on your absense. We missed you, but I can certainly understand why you didn't log on. [personal profile] garryowen was going to poke you, but I don't know if she's done it yet. I just wound up making a post on my DW and we repsonded to that back and forth as we noticed something,or felt something.

The next one is going to be Entropy Effect, if you're interested or have the time. I don't remember much about the story, which means I haven't reread it since my teen probably. It was one of the early Pocket Book releases (the first after the Motion Picture book), and the quality was spotty at best back then. It'll be interesting to revisit it.

I don't know who'll make the first post on the book, but I hope you'll be able to join us (maybe you'll be first and we can join you) for the fun. If not, I'll let you know what the next choice is.

I love Uhura's Song! It's proof positive that a Mary-Sue fic can be good!

[personal profile] twinsarein 2009-07-08 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
I read it so many times when I was in my teens and 20s. I juggle between the three I mentioned above as my top favorite. I didn't know it was a Mary Sue fic. I'd never even heard the term until I discovered the world on online fandoms less than two years ago. I think the series that defines Mary Sue for me is one written by a woman named Laurall K. Hamilton. She's been so blatant that even I picked up on it before I knew what to call it.

I'm assuming the Mary Sue character was Evan Wilson.
