movie night
We went to the movies to see "The Secret Life of Bees". I really wanted to see Max Payne, but this was the compromise movie...if by compromise we mean everyone yelling hell no.
So, it was manipulative, tear-jerking and kind of skirted the edges of logic and believability, but it also made me cry like a little bitch but inside where no one could see. It made Mr. R nostalgic in a depressed kind of way (he's going through stuff lately). That little Dakota Fanning...it was odd, at some angles, around the eyes, she looked kind of like my mother. That made me sniffly. And then other stuff made me sniffly. I'm not giving it a review because I'm sure that each individual will see their own movie--no doubt folks my age are going to be seeing a different flick than folks much younger than us.
After, we went to a diner and I had carrot cake. Not bad. Oh, and we bought a loaf of cheese bread to take home with us. Yum! I love cheese bread from the diner.
Also, there's been some stuff going on in my life that hasn't been a lot of fun. It's not me directly, but it's the Fam and that's the same as it happening to me. As you know, I'm not good at handling stress. I cram it all inside until it explodes, oy. Or I take it to work and dump it on my poor unsuspecting co-workers...thanks for working that bulls-eye thing guys! So, upheaval in the household, upheaval at the job--don't ask! And upheaval in my inner life. Oy, the heaving. I'll describe that another day. As for right now, secrets, bees, honey and carrot cake, and playing footise in the dark--these are the important things.

I can see the good in all the things except for bees. Bees freak me out. In fact, the one episode of Doctor Who with the huge bee? That was the one that had me closing my eyes more than any horror film I've ever seen. And the SPN episode with all the bugs? Freaked me right out.
Cheese bread and any variation thereof is possibly the best savoury thing ever created. ::manic nodding:: There's this bakery back home that makes the most amazing cheese croisants. ::salivates at the mere thought:: There's a greek filo pastry cheesy thing that's also amazing. I think I have the recipe somewhere if you want it. Mum definitely has it so if I can't find it in my own disorganised flat, she'll have it in her folder.
And oh! Oh! I remembered a silly british joke today! Ahem ::clears throat:: What do American beer and sex in a canoe have in common? ::dramatic pause:: They're both fucking close to water! HEE!

i tried to read that book a few weeks ago and got halfway through it. when it became clear the girl was falling for that handsome young man, i stopped, deathly afraid someone was going to get killed over it. so i cheated and read the last couple of pages. once it's on video, i'll rent it for queen latifah.

I haven't been to see a movie in ages--since The Dark Knight, I think--except that I just went to see Ghostbusters, showing at a local theater. That, of course, was awesome!! Seeing it on the big screen really reminded me of exactly how Rick Moranis is comic genius in that movie. So funny!!
In other news, if you are looking for a new, cheesy TV show, I have to point you to Crusoe. I caught the last half hour of the show and about fell off the couch at the overflowing amounts of HoYay!

omgoodness, I can imagine how much fun it must have been to see it on the big screen--I've only seen it on TV but I swear, it's one of my favorite movies ever. And yes, Rick Moranis was terrific in that flick!
I will make an effort to see Crusoe--it sounds pretty interesting. And when a 15 second teaser commercial makes you say, "what--say what--oh my..." than yeah--chock full of HoYay indeed!

Ah, the stress is me worrying over BG's unhappiness, and worry over some possible financial problems but I'm trying to not see that, and trying not to smother my baby. You know. Awwww! You're a good mommy. You're just doing what mommy's do. My mommy's the same way with every single one of us and the oldest is 47, so age doesn't matter either.

It's much more meaningful to read this book (and apparently see the movie) when you have a wealth of life experiences to help you process it. That's just my humble opinion.
Oh, I *really* think so. I know so much of this movie flew past the kids in the audience (and I was surprised at how many there were). There were bits in the movie that you'd only really understand if you've lived through the era, even without dealing with racism personally.
