Remember when I said I was no longer telling long ass stories never ever again? Yeah, well, shut up. But here is a short SHORT ficlet. I found it when I was gathering up some notes I had scattered willy-nilly, hither and yon. I really didn't remember writing this. Weird, hunh?


Fire.

Fire racing through black buildings, smoke pouring out, sky black, fire, fire…

Dean forced his eyes open and forced his lungs to work, inhaled deeply. The TV. The TV'd been on all night, turned to news…apartment fire. That's all. No fire pouring down from the sky, no black curled twisted hulks, no bodies falling out of the sky….

He sat up and wiped greasy sweat from his face and took calming breaths. It's okay, it's okay…never happened. The dreams were just that, dreams, nasty fucking nightmares but thank fuck that's all they were. He dropped back down on the bed and exhaled…clean air, no taste or taint of oily smoke, no sound of moaning, screaming…

There was no hell on earth and judging from the racket the birds were making out side, it was a pretty good day—and where was Sam?

His heart slammed up against his ribs and he jerked upright again—the bed across the room was made up, neat as a pin and untouched—his duffle was dumped across it and. Where. Was. Sam?

The bathroom door opened and Sam strolled out. "Hey. Hey—Dean? What's wrong?"

"Sam—Sam—" he could hardly breathe around the lump in his throat. He blinked wet away from his eyes. Sam.

Yee-ees…and you're Dean. Now that we're sure of that…" He walked around to Dean's side of the bed and kissed him—tried to. Dean yanked back.

"Sammy—the fuck—" he squeaked and Sam's face fell, hurt swept over it and his eyes looked full of dark, and then, he was smiling again, so quickly Dean wasn't really sure he hadn't imagined…

Sam shook his head, cocked an eyebrow. "Hey. Dean, it's just me, okay? No one else is here; no one else knows us. It's okay." His big hand curved around his face and it fit like…it was good. It felt warm and right and just where he should be. His hand came up to cup Sam's and he relaxed.

It was like bathing in sunshine, like a shower of sparks riding his veins and filling him up, warm, warm and a bunch of things that made Dean embarrassed to think, but most of all it felt like love. It felt like winning.

They must have won.
