yakky time!

Help me oh three or four friends who read SpN fic and in particular, my SpN fic, and narrowing that down even more, comment on the damn things--tell me what I should work on?

1) a J2 AU set in the mid-fifties. Say, how much research do I have to do on city life back then? And can I fuzzy the city? Like, pretendlike it's New York or whatever and "just go along with me on this, guys". Can I do that? I long for black turtle necks and too tight striped polo shirts. Also, there would be a lot of na-na in this story.

2)The Public Enemy one--kind of a cross of Boondock Saints, only no divine mission and a whole lot of psychotic killers and general misbehaving with Warner Bros gangster movies and psycho killers--did I mention that? A little na-na in this one.

3)1) the vaguely western-cowboy-backstory on the Colt fic I've talked about for what, two years? In this story the guys aren't raised together and don't know they're brothers (yeah, cause that makes teh naughty stuff better. Almost totally na-na free, this one.

4) a weird kind of folktale, Manly Wade Wellman x-over but I want [livejournal.com profile] danceswithgary to steer me in the right direction with that one. Wincest with no sex. I know, I know, but not everything needs sticky bits. Ha! I know right???

I've got actual info for Not!Cowboy, vague memories and feelings and a couple of pretty pictures for Beat!J2, and nothing but a lot of love and some of the same info I used for East of The Sun for CrazyInLoveBoys.

I need to be poked and prodded into doing something. I have all these sorta done stories floating around, and I do have a bit more I'd like to do on that Dean/Cas story only trying to write het sex is screwing me up. (Odd, how hard it is to write, considering how much I love it.) RL is sucking the juice out of my brain but I miss being in a nice long story with lots of research and having fun with it.

Help a nice old lady out?

They are all yammering at me at the same time!! I swear, all of them. Little scenes pop in my head all the time. It's worse than writing some of those SV fics!

The most actual research I've done has been on the Coltfic one. I've got character names, background on the Colt, real and fake, lots of lore and stuff about blacksmiths--very important to the story.

The J2 thing I've got a ton of naughty bits floating around in my head. Does that count?

Um...write down all the bits and see what happens?

Oooh...Colt!fic sounds awesome. All the ideas sound awesome but I love cowboys.

That totally counts since I cannot write porn at all. Not even when I spend all day fantasizing about hot guys and body shots. How pathetic is THAT?

Yes--I should just write down whatever bits pop up and worry about string them together into something coherent after I get the gist of the story. sometimes, that works even better for me than linear writing.

Coltfic is actually less a cowboy story and more of a myth set in the old west. Did you know there was no such thing as a cowboy hat like we think of until the the 1860s?! Which blows, because this story takes place in the 1830s. Talk about bummed--I already had this great picture in my mind of Sam with the hat and duster. *sigh* So much for that! *G*

I'd suggest sacrificing historical accuracy for the hotness of Sam in a duster and Stetson, but I know you'd smack me. If I was writing I'd smack me for thinking it. I've been wanting to write a western for years as a pro fic novel. The research is what keeps killing me so I can understand your problem. ;)

*CLINGS*

You know I want to cheat, omgod, so bad!

[identity profile] selinamoonfire.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
Why does it have to be 1830s?

[identity profile] roxymissrose.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
Ah-ha--Samuel Colt makes a wooden model of the Colt that he uses as the basis for the mass production of a gun in 1832. That's the beginning of the story. What happens in the pilot more or less happens in the fic. In my AU, Dean's the one who actually makes the gun. I make no speculations about the future. *g*

It's 1853 when the boys meet, so no cowboy hats. *sigh* But I'm thinking of Sam wearing a forage cap, kind of like the Cavalry wore in the Civil War. Which took place later than this yes, but the hats were in some use before the war...*GAH*!!! I'm driving myself crazy, lol!

LOL I know that would happen if I wrote historical fiction but I still want to.

I'm curious. Did you memorize all your research or do you have some sort of awe-inspiring method or organization?

What I have is a note book full of scribbles, a shit ton of post-its and a bazillion bookmarks. And still I'm looking stuff up! For most stuff, I just go to Wikipedia because I'm not worried about super-accuracy, just the glaring stuff like current events of the time if I need it, clothes, transportation, stuff like that. The two stories I worked the hardest on were Firebird and East and for those my workspace looked like John's motel room--post-its everywhere, lol!
