Help me oh three or four friends who read SpN fic and in particular, my SpN fic, and narrowing that down even more, comment on the damn things--tell me what I should work on?

1) a J2 AU set in the mid-fifties. Say, how much research do I have to do on city life back then? And can I fuzzy the city? Like, pretendlike it's New York or whatever and "just go along with me on this, guys". Can I do that? I long for black turtle necks and too tight striped polo shirts. Also, there would be a lot of na-na in this story.

2)The Public Enemy one--kind of a cross of Boondock Saints, only no divine mission and a whole lot of psychotic killers and general misbehaving with Warner Bros gangster movies and psycho killers--did I mention that? A little na-na in this one.

3)1) the vaguely western-cowboy-backstory on the Colt fic I've talked about for what, two years? In this story the guys aren't raised together and don't know they're brothers (yeah, cause that makes teh naughty stuff better. Almost totally na-na free, this one.

4) a weird kind of folktale, Manly Wade Wellman x-over but I want [livejournal.com profile] danceswithgary to steer me in the right direction with that one. Wincest with no sex. I know, I know, but not everything needs sticky bits. Ha! I know right???

I've got actual info for Not!Cowboy, vague memories and feelings and a couple of pretty pictures for Beat!J2, and nothing but a lot of love and some of the same info I used for East of The Sun for CrazyInLoveBoys.

I need to be poked and prodded into doing something. I have all these sorta done stories floating around, and I do have a bit more I'd like to do on that Dean/Cas story only trying to write het sex is screwing me up. (Odd, how hard it is to write, considering how much I love it.) RL is sucking the juice out of my brain but I miss being in a nice long story with lots of research and having fun with it.

Help a nice old lady out?

I vote for the '50s J2 AU cause it sounds totally different and fun and you do a great job with atmosphere in your fics, so I think you'd knock it out of the park.

I've been getting little flashes here and there of this one. My main problem here is Jensen's character. I can't figure out just who or what I want him to be. I waffle between working boy, and 'working' boy. But it would be fun--the clothes, the music, the changing moral scene...*G*

one vote for the Beat Boys! :)

I don't know who Wade Wllman is. Um. I love the idea of Beat!j2. Psycho boys is also damn fun, so long as you don't make them all into torturing 24/7. I don't wanna read that.

Ah--thanks for helping out! *squeeze*

The M W Wellman stuff is based on folk-tales and ghost stories from the Ozarks. If you're interested at all in American folktales, these are so good! The main character is called Silver John, and he wanders the hills, gathering old folk songs and helping folks out. Kind of like Supernatural only just with Sam, raised in the country and free from demon blood. Going that way would let me play with those Appalachian tales and write Silver John into a fic. I guess it would basically be a gen story with an outsider POV.

Psycho boys wouldn't be torturing 24/7 but close? It would be a retelling of the whole story without demons(maybe) and without checks on the boys, much closer to the Cagney movie. I adore that time period! So pretty! :) But out of all of these, it would be the most complicated story to write. :(

And of course it's all about you! No, seriously, it is. :)

There would be Sam in the background, and Dean talking to Silver John. My idea for it is a true love lost kind of story, with the lover having to fight to get back his love--but without Dean realizing that's what's going on and John knowing but not remarking on the specifics of it. It's a pretty vague idea so far but I kind of like it. 'Course, I've liked a ton of stuff that never flew so--*shrugs* We'll see!

I second the Beat J2 AU because I too have a hankering for some black turtle necks, too tight striped polo shirts, *also* too tight straight leg pants and everybody smoking like a chimney.

*sigh*

*pokes you with blunted stick*

See? I'm nice about it kinda. . . *wink*

Honestly, though, those all sound extremely interesting and I think I can safely say that those of us who do read your SpN fic (and I bet there are more of us than you think, hon) will gladly read *any* of those stories. And I mean *gladly* gladly.

Hee!

Another vote for the J2 AU! The main thing holding me back here is Jensen's character--I'm not sure where to go with him--manwhoor or average working guy? I know I want most of the fic to revolve around a department store and the window dressers and graphic artists who work there--in those days, some big stores had their own graphics department and did their own ads. And window dressing was coming into it's own then. The displays were incredible and the people who did them were well-known. Can't you see Michael as a flamboyant window dresser? Also, there would be a whole lot of making shit up because who would know different??

*GRIN*

I'm psyching myself up. *G*

Yay! So is Sam a window dresser apprentice, or a sales clerk. . . or, oh wait, is that a secret? *bites nails*

I'm all aflutter now, I can't wait!

I'm thinking he works in the graphics dept. and his fiance, Sandy, works with Mike as a window dresser. Mike's involved kind of with Thomas, who's a hustler who thinks he's straight. And it gets more complicated form there. Mind you--not a bit of this is on paper yet.

There's lots and lots of everyone behaving really badly...which probably means folks won't read it. A cheating Jared might turn people off. And of course, there's always my fear of being able to handle a story closer to real life with no fantasy elements to hide behind. *wibble*

If I were to number them 1-4, then my choices align with your order exactly. I'm starting to read more SpN and J2, but it's slow going. What I usually wind up doing is see a story on my flist and I say, "Oooo, that looks good. I'll copy and paste it into a Word doc so I can read it soon. Yeah, right. That file has done nothing but grow. No shrinkage at all.

You can have a fic without sticky bits?! Are you sure? You might want to check your information. I think you are mistaken or misguided. Either way, the belief needs to be corrected, now.

*SNORFLE*!!!! Yes!!! Kind of....

Looks like the J2 is winning-meep! I have to remember that I'm supposed to be faking their real personalities, and not SamnDean's. Writing RPF is *hard*! That's why I hardly ever do it--it makes me nervous! I'll be stealing other folks' characterizations like a mug!

They are all yammering at me at the same time!! I swear, all of them. Little scenes pop in my head all the time. It's worse than writing some of those SV fics!

The most actual research I've done has been on the Coltfic one. I've got character names, background on the Colt, real and fake, lots of lore and stuff about blacksmiths--very important to the story.

The J2 thing I've got a ton of naughty bits floating around in my head. Does that count?

Um...write down all the bits and see what happens?

Oooh...Colt!fic sounds awesome. All the ideas sound awesome but I love cowboys.

The J2 thing I've got a ton of naughty bits floating around in my head. Does that count?

That totally counts since I cannot write porn at all. Not even when I spend all day fantasizing about hot guys and body shots. How pathetic is THAT?

(no subject)

10/22/09 04:29 am (UTC)
Posted by [identity profile] roxymissrose.livejournal.com
Yes--I should just write down whatever bits pop up and worry about string them together into something coherent after I get the gist of the story. sometimes, that works even better for me than linear writing.

Coltfic is actually less a cowboy story and more of a myth set in the old west. Did you know there was no such thing as a cowboy hat like we think of until the the 1860s?! Which blows, because this story takes place in the 1830s. Talk about bummed--I already had this great picture in my mind of Sam with the hat and duster. *sigh* So much for that! *G*

I'd suggest sacrificing historical accuracy for the hotness of Sam in a duster and Stetson, but I know you'd smack me. If I was writing I'd smack me for thinking it. I've been wanting to write a western for years as a pro fic novel. The research is what keeps killing me so I can understand your problem. ;)

Ah-ha--Samuel Colt makes a wooden model of the Colt that he uses as the basis for the mass production of a gun in 1832. That's the beginning of the story. What happens in the pilot more or less happens in the fic. In my AU, Dean's the one who actually makes the gun. I make no speculations about the future. *g*

It's 1853 when the boys meet, so no cowboy hats. *sigh* But I'm thinking of Sam wearing a forage cap, kind of like the Cavalry wore in the Civil War. Which took place later than this yes, but the hats were in some use before the war...*GAH*!!! I'm driving myself crazy, lol!

What I have is a note book full of scribbles, a shit ton of post-its and a bazillion bookmarks. And still I'm looking stuff up! For most stuff, I just go to Wikipedia because I'm not worried about super-accuracy, just the glaring stuff like current events of the time if I need it, clothes, transportation, stuff like that. The two stories I worked the hardest on were Firebird and East and for those my workspace looked like John's motel room--post-its everywhere, lol!

If you hide my name behind an SPN cut, I'll likely miss your poking, silly.

My vote would obviously be the Manly Wade Wellman. I'd even consider a co-write, if you're interested. I have something of an outline on the bunny I had a while back and with a little research (like finishing re-reading the Silver John books) I could help with the characterization and such.

*do'h*!! *slaps head*

I want to do it anyway--it would be a fairly short piece so I think I could handle that as well as write my other ideas.

Co-writing, hah--I can tell you right now, it wouldn't work for me. There's a reason why Mr. Roxy and I don't dance together. I'm not good that way. *hides face* But I value your input, and you have experience in reining me in and pointing out my tics and booboos and logic bombs and I want this story to be *good*. So I was hoping maybe you could do for me what you did in East? Right now, I'm at the point where it's kind of simmering in my mind. I want to go with John's pov, looking at Dean.

I'm also going to fuzzy up the whole time-line, and ignore the fact that John's actually older than Dean's dad. Do you think that would matter? I really want him to be Dean's age, or at the most, the same age as John Winchester would be. That would probably work better hunh?

The fuzzy John? I was going to go with same age as John Winchester in mine. If you want younger, you could consider using the son of Silver John meeting the boys - they could compare what their fathers did. :-D
