November 11

This is my dad. He's holding me. My dad served in the Army--WWII, and in Viet Nam. He did thirty years and retired. The Army probably gave him a better life than he would have had in Florida at the time. My dad wasn't a service kind of guy. Once he got out of the army he was done. I think the thing he valued about his service was meeting my mom when he was stationed in Europe. (warbaby here).

He gave up a lot for this country, and in my opinion, gave a lot more than he got. When he came back to the States with my mom, it took them forever to find a place to live. Service wasn't good enough. He was a vet, but he was a Black vet, and that didn't mean anything to anyone. Still, he overcame, and eventually, Black vets were recognized for their service too.

So anyway, my dad--handsome devil.

That's a beautiful photo... I'm afraid my modern US History is sadly lacking. I knew vaguely that Black vets weren't treated the saem way but I should probably looking into it!

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks so much for commenting! *HUG*

Yeah, it was a different world back than. And interracial couples had a whole different thing to deal with. But hey, it worked out great for my folks in the end--look at that fabulous kid they were gifted with--and modest, did I mention modest? *G*

Boy do you look so impressed lol

Are you a mulatto?

[identity profile] roxymissrose.livejournal.com 2009-11-12 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
Lol! I still look that impressed with things!

I'm mixed, yeah, but I don't think of myself as anything but Black. (or that stupid PC term, African-American. *rolls eyes* Me, I *prefer* Black.) ;)

Many thanks to your dad for his service and dedication to a country who seemed to take him and his commitment for granted for far too long.

And you are both some handsome devils in that pic! *pinches your cheeks*

[identity profile] roxymissrose.livejournal.com 2009-11-12 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you--those men worked hard for their country, I'm glad that their service has been recognized.

Have you ever seen a crankier looking baby? I still make that face...*GRIN*

*HUGHUG*

Mm, have to agree, he is very handsome!

Wow, in WWII and Vietnam? That's impressive! I held a lot of respect for veterans and if he was in two wars...Whau.

[identity profile] roxymissrose.livejournal.com 2009-11-12 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
*grins*

Yeah, lots of guys in his generation served in both wars. He was in the infantry in WWII and in the Army band in Nam--which trust me, wasn't any safer!

That is a beautiful, beautiful picture and a wonderful story to go with it. This country still doesn't recognize its' vets the way it should, that's why it's up to us to always remember to say 'thank you'.

Thank you, to your dad.

[identity profile] roxymissrose.livejournal.com 2009-11-12 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you!

He is handsome.

And you look very no-nonsense in that picture. Determined baby is determined.

ooh, your dad's a stud :) This photo is so lovely. Reminds me of a lot floating around through my family. We have lots of black vets. My grandfather was a Black Vet from Nam too. I love seeing photos of him in his uniform. Those men were so handsome (I swear my Papa still is). He already had a family started when he was shipped out, but, being black I don't think he got any help from his country when he returned, even here in California. These days he (and his sons, also vets) gets a lot more recognition for all he gave and yeah, I'm proud of him.
Thanks for sharing, Roxy! your father's story is beautiful. I know you're proud, you should be :)
xoxo

*grin* Thanks! Yeah, those guys looked AMAZING in uniform! I was looking for one of the Nam pics--if I find it I'll post it.

These days he (and his sons, also vets) gets a lot more recognition for all he gave and yeah, I'm proud of him.

Thank god it's a different day! Thanks for sharing with me, too!

also, i love your icon*koff*

Tell your Dad, or just know, that I say thanks for making sure that America was still a place for the brave and the free by the time I was born. Also, for all the strides he personally made to make sure that people of color and other minorities (women, gay) were given the respect that every human deserves!

much love and gratitude

He had that Sidney Poitier-ish kind of look. The sibs favor him to an extent, except me--I look a wee bit more like my mom. And if you'd pinched my baby cheeks back then, I'm pretty sure I'd have taken a finger--look at that evol mug!!

[identity profile] redteekal.livejournal.com 2009-11-12 09:19 am (UTC)(link)
Great photo...and he truly is a good looking man. He looks pretty proud of himself there and so he should - he's holding the gorgeous bundle of Roxy! Thanks for sharing the pic.

He was ridiculously handsome and even now, everyone thinks he's adorable and make a fuss over him. Even when he's cranky, they think it's cute...how does he do that?

*look all shifty-eyed* Not like it's hereditary or anything....

Handsome man. Kinda reminds me a bit of Nat King Cole in that photo, not quite so broad in the face, though. (Yeah, I have a thing for Cole ;D ).

Why thank you! He always put me in mind of Sidney Poitier, but Nat is cool! (wee roxy had a crush on him)

The first thing I noticed about your dad, was actually the love on his face as he gazes at you. What a wonderful moment to capture. So much is lost when people insist on you looking at the camera and smiling.

Your dad is way handsome, especially in his uniform. People like him deserve daily thanks for all they did for this country. I know whenever my husband sees a man in a veteran's cap, he goes up to say thank you (so far he hasn't seen a woman in one of those caps - I don't know if he'd go up to them or not). Anyway, tell your dad 'thank you' from me.

Thank you!

[identity profile] roxymissrose.livejournal.com 2009-11-12 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I was working at the store one day, and saw a about Dad's age go up and thank a young woman in unniform for her service--I was *very* touched. It was a lovely moment.

Yeah--me and dad have had our issues, but I kind of was his favorite--I think because I was so cranky. ;)

Oh, Miss Rose, that is an awesome story! So very cool. Warbaby! OH, i love it.

For all the horror and misery they had to endure, it's just ridiculous and grotesque that Black servicemen and women had to endure a ton of *extra* crap when they got home, and not even get recognized for the things they did.

I'm so glad you posted this - it's just the most wonderful picture. Your dad looks so proud of you!
*pinches your cute little cheeks*
*hugs you tight*

Thank you, Roxy-Dad, for everything you did for a country that didn't care. We will not forget!

[identity profile] roxymissrose.livejournal.com 2009-11-12 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
*hugs you so tight*

I'll tell him about all the thank yous--I think he'll kind of like that. :)

OMG but he's gorgeous! Lousy that he didn't get Veteran benefits until later.

So what country is your mother from?

[identity profile] roxymissrose.livejournal.com 2009-11-12 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! *beams*

My mother was Austrian--she was born in Innsbruck and raised in Salzburg. She was an amazing person--and always brave!
