Curiouser and curiouser

what the hell is wrong with dick? The word--I mean, seriously, what's wrong with it?
The lovely [livejournal.com profile] mskatej had a most amusing and informative poll in her lj today, and again it was stated 'dick' is an awful word.

Why? Dick is so..expressive! You can use it so many ways!

I like dick. *pauses for snickers, knowing full well she meant it both ways*

Tell me please, why you don't.

I like dick, too. Hee. I prefer cock, though. And also, hee. :-)

*snorfle!* It's great to be twelve no?
See, cock to me sounds weird...sort of ummm...flabby. Heh.

[personal profile] treetracer 2006-02-11 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it can be used as an insult. (You dick!) Other than that, it's probably personal preference based on what you read getting into slash. Doesn't really matter to me, one way or the other. *shrug*

[identity profile] roxymissrose.livejournal.com 2006-02-11 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
You think? Maybe that's it. I'm used to hearing dick. It sounds more masculine to me for some reason.

Also, "don't dick with me."

and "what are you doing?"
"Nothing, just dicking around."
See? Multi-purpose! *grin*

Dick is a wonderful sexual word. Dick is great. Dick is fun. I choose sweat, because sweat implies heat, possible friction and grinding. Yes, oh so sweet grinding.

Dick is a lovely work, not as dirty as cock. I guess its more on the vanilla side of sexual vocabulary.

[identity profile] roxymissrose.livejournal.com 2006-02-11 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
See, cock isn't dirty to me. It's just kind of...blaaaah.
Sweat is good. Very good.

I love dick! There is nothing at all wrong with dick. Good Lord. Never ever think that. Dick gets many points. (Cock gets more though.)

[identity profile] roxymissrose.livejournal.com 2006-02-11 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Dick is more forceful to me. Dick means business. Dick means in the morning, you're going to be sore, and smiling a lot. Cock is kind of..."Oh. That was nice. Care for a beverage?"

Everbody just uses cock so much that you get thrown when you come across a dick.

.....

LOL!

[identity profile] roxymissrose.livejournal.com 2006-02-11 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
LOL!!!!!!

Yeah, I know! It's so weird!

I hardly ever heard cock growing up. Maybe because I was on a military base most of the time? maybe my age? I wonder.
And of course, the real hard core word--doinky. I never read doinky in a fic. There needs to be more doinky. *nods*

Heee! See? both good!

[identity profile] pepperjackcandy.livejournal.com 2006-02-11 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, but have you seen Dick?

Also, I'm casting my vote for "weiner."

[identity profile] roxymissrose.livejournal.com 2006-02-11 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Ah! Weiner, there's a word you want to hear in the throes of passion...nearly as expressive as doinky, but not quite as much as dingleberry.

See, dick was only used as an insult for as long as I can remember, so it seems out of place often in a fic. Cock just draws me.

Of course, I'm sitting over here giggling to myself about doinky.

Doinky. God.

[identity profile] roxymissrose.livejournal.com 2006-02-11 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmmm...not loving doinky eh? [livejournal.com profile] pepperjackcandy suggests weiner, johnson has a musical quality, and of course there's always the classic--wee-wee.

[identity profile] rakshathewolf.livejournal.com 2006-02-11 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't a doinky the same as an ass? *snerk*. It's the sign of the Democratic Party, right?

I like cock; it sounds toppier to me. Dick is good, too, though.

[identity profile] roxymissrose.livejournal.com 2006-02-11 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
Funny, dick sounds toppier to me. Doinky....be so ashamed, so ashamed.

Without dick, there'd be no "strictly dickly."

Take that, cock! And like it! :)

Ahem, maybe dick is more R, cock NC17. You know, sort of like studio movies versus porn. Or something.

I don't hate dick, but i prefer cock. maybe it's the alliteration ... actually with all the Britfic i'm reading, i'm getting awfully fond of prick.:)

[identity profile] roxymissrose.livejournal.com 2006-02-11 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
*loves all over your icon* One of my all time favorites! You know what. I really like prick as a word too. It sounds better than cock to me.

I like dick...

especially if Bruce has him bent over the Batmobile.

[identity profile] mkitty3.livejournal.com 2006-02-11 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
I love cock and I love dick! Prick works fine too! The only one I have a real problem with is throbbing member. I hate it when people call it a member. A member of what?!!

I think cock maybe my favorite word in the English language. It sounds so dirty to me. I never heard the word cock used until I started reading fan fic. Dick has always been around and used in every form possible. I always think of an insult when I hear the word dick. Cock just seems unique to me. Like it's a fan fic thing:) Mmmmmmmmmmmm cock!

[identity profile] katholicgrrl.livejournal.com 2006-02-11 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yes, i agree about the member! way over and ill-used. i could see it if we're talking Holmes/Watson, but Harry Potter? I don't think so! (and i have seen this)

[identity profile] onelittlesleep.livejournal.com 2006-02-11 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
I like dick. lol..um.

Yeah, so dick as a word. It seems appropriate, especially in slash fiction, especially if one of the boys is going to say something about his dick. Because a guy says dick, most guys say dick. Whenever my husband has said cock, it's because I've prompted him (uh, don't ask?), and he's always seemed uncomfortable. Men say dick. You know? I have never had a problem with it in slash fiction. Ever.

I've had problems with other words like...hmmm...tumescent. lol. That will never be sexy.

[identity profile] roxymissrose.livejournal.com 2006-02-11 06:37 am (UTC)(link)

are you kidding? Hell yeah I'm going to ask--lol!!!

Tumescent--yark!That's just so technical sounding. I can understand that we search for different ways of describing the same old thing but some words need to be left alone.

Oh, and it's only in a sexual sense. Can read it in discussion, just not in the sexy parts.

[identity profile] garryowen.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, I don't have a problem with it. I kinda like it, actually. I think there are a couple of things at work:

1. Guys use the word "dick" a lot, and don't really seem to use cock when they're talking to each other. So, perhaps, since fandom is mostly female, we feel more comfortable with "cock." Like we own it more. Similar to why women don't like the word "cunt" or "pussy."

2. Dick also has derogatory meanings. "He's such a dick!" Whereas we never say, "What a cock! He totally gave me a shitty work schedule!"

I like that dick has so many meanings, including, "We dicked around all day and got nothing done." How awesome is that. Plus, it has all those hard consonants. Yeah.

[identity profile] roxymissrose.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
I do use dick an awful lot in everyday speech. I tend to express myself a *lot* differently in RL than I do on line. Dick is a handy word. One I *never * use at home, Mr. Roxy would have a bloody fit. But at work, hanging out with the other loons, oy! Sometimes I don't do dick all day. *grin*
Yeah, it's definitely not a girly word.

[identity profile] squeakypiggy.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm...Dick vs Cock? Gotta say, cock sounds so much more harsh and forceful. Dick, however, is worlds more malleable in your mouth *snickers*...much like the word fuck. It can be drawn out, clipped, start off quiet at the beginning and explode at the end. Whenever I read them in fanfic it just makes my mouth quirk.

Growing up our family just called it a "weenus" which still to this day can make me giggle. My nana called it a "poppycock" and a "snickendoodle."

The funniest usage I've ever had...we were babysitting a 4 year old boy who was in that gotta-tell-everyone-what-I-did phase. He proclaimed that he had to use the bathroom as his mom came to pick him up. We were chatting in the livingroom when her son came running out san-undies and posed ala-Superman and we hear, "MOMMIE! MY WEENUS SAYS "RRRRAAAARRRRR!"

We all just looked at each other and busted up laughing, to which she says, "Well at least he's not calling it his "free Willy" anymore."

[identity profile] roxymissrose.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my god--I think I hurt myself laughing!! Free Willy? *falls down laughing*
