what the hell is wrong with dick? The word--I mean, seriously, what's wrong with it?
The lovely
mskatej had a most amusing and informative poll in her lj today, and again it was stated 'dick' is an awful word.
Why? Dick is so..expressive! You can use it so many ways!
I like dick. *pauses for snickers, knowing full well she meant it both ways*
Tell me please, why you don't.

and "what are you doing?"
"Nothing, just dicking around."
See? Multi-purpose! *grin*

2/11/06 01:51 am (UTC)Dick is a lovely work, not as dirty as cock. I guess its more on the vanilla side of sexual vocabulary.

2/11/06 01:58 am (UTC)Yeah, I know! It's so weird!
I hardly ever heard cock growing up. Maybe because I was on a military base most of the time? maybe my age? I wonder.
And of course, the real hard core word--doinky. I never read doinky in a fic. There needs to be more doinky. *nods*

Ahem, maybe dick is more R, cock NC17. You know, sort of like studio movies versus porn. Or something.

2/11/06 03:51 am (UTC)I think cock maybe my favorite word in the English language. It sounds so dirty to me. I never heard the word cock used until I started reading fan fic. Dick has always been around and used in every form possible. I always think of an insult when I hear the word dick. Cock just seems unique to me. Like it's a fan fic thing:) Mmmmmmmmmmmm cock!

2/11/06 05:05 am (UTC)Yeah, so dick as a word. It seems appropriate, especially in slash fiction, especially if one of the boys is going to say something about his dick. Because a guy says dick, most guys say dick. Whenever my husband has said cock, it's because I've prompted him (uh, don't ask?), and he's always seemed uncomfortable. Men say dick. You know? I have never had a problem with it in slash fiction. Ever.
I've had problems with other words like...hmmm...tumescent. lol. That will never be sexy.

2/11/06 06:37 am (UTC)are you kidding? Hell yeah I'm going to ask--lol!!!
Tumescent--yark!That's just so technical sounding. I can understand that we search for different ways of describing the same old thing but some words need to be left alone.

2/12/06 03:43 am (UTC)1. Guys use the word "dick" a lot, and don't really seem to use cock when they're talking to each other. So, perhaps, since fandom is mostly female, we feel more comfortable with "cock." Like we own it more. Similar to why women don't like the word "cunt" or "pussy."
2. Dick also has derogatory meanings. "He's such a dick!" Whereas we never say, "What a cock! He totally gave me a shitty work schedule!"
I like that dick has so many meanings, including, "We dicked around all day and got nothing done." How awesome is that. Plus, it has all those hard consonants. Yeah.

2/12/06 04:13 am (UTC)Yeah, it's definitely not a girly word.

2/12/06 03:53 am (UTC)Growing up our family just called it a "weenus" which still to this day can make me giggle. My nana called it a "poppycock" and a "snickendoodle."
The funniest usage I've ever had...we were babysitting a 4 year old boy who was in that gotta-tell-everyone-what-I-did phase. He proclaimed that he had to use the bathroom as his mom came to pick him up. We were chatting in the livingroom when her son came running out san-undies and posed ala-Superman and we hear, "MOMMIE! MY WEENUS SAYS "RRRRAAAARRRRR!"
We all just looked at each other and busted up laughing, to which she says, "Well at least he's not calling it his "free Willy" anymore."
