advice, please....

Should I get the new Anita Blake? She's tiresome as fuck, but it's supposed to have Edward in it, and you know I love shiny Edward. I just don't want to have to sit through some more of Blake's oh woe is me, everything wants to get this bullshit.

Miss me? *G*

heheheh I've never read Anita Blake!!! should I?

I have no strong feelings on this matter at all, why do you ask?

[identity profile] justabi.livejournal.com 2009-07-02 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
Much as I love me some Edward, just fucking NO, I am never reading another one of those books unless there is a PROMISE on the cover that there will be no sexing. That woman makes sex scenes PAINFUL to read, and not in the good way. In the way that you want to IM snippets to people to make fun of the badfic and then BLEACH YOUR BRAIN. Swear to god, 12 year olds on ff.net write better porn! BLECH. If you are going to write smut, then fucking LEARN HOW TO WRITE SMUT, BITCH!

I don't know anything about Blake but hells yeah, I miss you. <3

I would personally advise you to NOT read it. I've decided not to get this one myself. I've given her every chance to improve and I had great hopes after the last one, however, I read a ton of reviews for this book and it sounds pretty bad. According to one reviewer Edward doesn't even kill anyone! How can Edward be Edward if he isn't hunting something? No thank you.

To be fair, I heard it was pretty good up to about 2/3 of the way through and then it just fell apart. I know Anita is the first character in a book I read in which it was obvious to me that she was a Mary Sue, and I'm usually oblivious to those things. Laurell is just that blantant with it and it gets worse with every book.

I'm with you - read to #10. Obsidian Butterfly is a great place to personally end the series since it takes Anita out of her home environment. That book was fantastic, and the last really good one. I like Micah, Nathanial, and Damian and would have been happy if the susequent books dealt with her and her growing relationship with them (god, did I get tired of Richard), but Anita just is getting ridiculous.

If you want to buy it, maybe wait for the paperback version in a year. Meanwhile, try Charlaine Harris, MaryJane Davidson, or Kim Harrison if you haven't already. All awesome reads, all about vampires, and all much better written than the current Hamilton books. If you want something really different try Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series if you don't know it. They're fantastic, fun, and funny (not vampires though, just a very inept bounty hunter). Oh wait...wh'e from NJ, these are probably advertised all over the place for you. Sorry.

Get it. If you're like me, you're gonna keep reading in the hopes that Anita grows a pair and gets over herself. Plus, I love Asher, Edward and Jason. So I read for them. Plus plus, I keep hoping somebody'll put a bullet in Richard's brain and he winds up in a permanent coma. *fingers crossed*

Have you tried her Merry Gentry series?? I like that a lot better than the more recent Anita Blake novels...

HI! *waves*

I stopped reading her a long time ago. She just got tiresome so I cant' say if you should get it or not.

Laurell Hamilton's books are usually like a train wreck for me. I know it's bad. I know I should look away and yet I read them anyway. I haven't read the latest one though. A friend of mine reviewed it and she didn't like it. It did have less sex which she liked but it went high on the disturbing scale. I'm not sure why; she didn't elaborate.

She did say that Anita didn't have sex with Edward. The freaky bounty hunter guy from Butterfly is in in it. My friend said that Anita was kind of OOC in it but not in a good way.

I wouldn't bother with the Merry Gentry books if you're getting tired of Anita's Mary Sue-ishness. They're worse. The first two were good, then Merry becomes even MORE perfect than Anita.

I've read it. Mostly for the enticement of Edward! Its like a watered down Obsidian Butterfly(which is one of my favorites) Same cast-ish, same get together to destroy super evil etc...

Without throwing out epic spoilers:

Instead of "woe is me everyone wants to hit that?" Its "Woe is me, I'm not a respected officer, woe, I'm a woman, they don't take me seriously, woe, they don't respect what me and my sweeties have, woe" OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

Edward is neutered, (and for more reasons than what happened to him post OB) there is not other way to describe his reactions to some things.

I remember being on page 320 and having a moment of wait there's been no sex! She slams it in at the end though there is actually a fade to black for what would have been her worst scene yet.

Oh and its the worst climax EVER. The ending is such a let down I actually read it twice to be sure that she didn't just do that. But alas she did.

Let me know if you want more details, I'm trying to be vague in case you decide to read it.

I bought it. I read it. I have to say that I was happy with the fact that the vast majority of the book didn't have sex in it. I will agree with the other comment that it did seem a little like a watered down version of Obsidian Butterfly. However, it did resolve two major issues (no spoilers) IMHO. I am not sure where LKH is going with the Anita character, but I know that the next book will have some other big issues to go through with her personal life.
In this book, I felt like LKH was dealing with a necessary issue with Anita, the effect of her personal life on her job as a Marshall. So, while some may read this as woe is me woe is me...I felt that it was a necessary step for the character.
As for Edward, we find some interesting character developments.
Olaf just gets creepier...I didn't know that was possible.
Overall, I bought the book on discount for 18.00, I say it was good for the entertainment value it provided me for the 2 days it took me to read it.

Don't buy it. That woman (Hamilton) pisses me off to no end. Go to the bookstore and read it. Don't even go to the library; I have it on good authority that if you bring a Laurell K. Hamilton book into your house, you become cursed and are unable to produce good smut. It's scary; I got rid of all my books and have written much better six scenes since then.

Read it, because Edward must be read, but don't buy it.

I read it....it started off well...just the AB of olden times and then true to form it went to pot. However I ask that you check my PM for more info....^-^

(Not having read the 32 comments before this one...)
I would have to go with no! Not even for Edward.

Of course, I got so annoyed about 3, 4, 5? (can't keep up anymore) books ago that I stopped reading entirely. Which was one of the saddest things ever because once upon a time it was my favorite series. And I live in St. Louis now. *sigh*

I've never read Anita Blake. I plan to--and per your suggestion, I'll stop after Obsidian Butterfly.

I haven't been around *sniff, kicks life*, but I miss you like Clark would miss the sun. *g*

Just download it with http://www.emule.com/
There is usually a copy just 1-2 weeks after the book comes out.
Her previous ones are available there as well.

Think of it as your local library...
