See, I don't hate her, I dislike her, but I wouldn't call it hate. I'm just tired of folks telling me what's racist or not. Fuck, I'm 53 years old. I know what fucking racism is.
Sigh. I just don't know what to say about all of this. I thought I was allowed to not like Lana Lang without being see as a hate monger along the likes of Hitler.
I'm not sure if they mean because we don't like her it makes us racist, or because we refer to her as a rodent. See, I think hamsters are kinda cute, but mostly annoying. That's why I call her Hamsterina. I didn't even know the chick was Asian, if I had, it would have made her more interesting, and they really should have written it into the show.
You are not alone in your hatred. I can't stand Lana, though there were a few times I found myself almost liking Pete. Hell, at least he was (eventually) smart enough to get out of Smallville.
Most of the people on my flist don't care for Lana. And, despite a few eps where we got a glimpse of how awesome Lana could be if the writers weren't such chowderheads, I've never liked her either.
However, unlike the person who started this clusterfuck, I understand the distinction between the character of Lana Lang and the actress who plays her. And I don't think that referring to a *totally fictional character* as "squirrel-face" or "hamster" makes me eligible for membership in the KKK.
It would be really nice if certain people could refrain from hurling insults at everyone who happens to disagree with them.

honestly, first I disliked her because she was there. I'll admit all I wanted to see was Clark and Lex. Then, the actress underwhelmed me with her ability to wring any juice totally from any scene she was in. Then, they decided she wasn't cool enough, and suddenly she was super Lana, who could do anything. It wasn't until this season that she's improved a lot in acting and rarely makes THE HAMSTER FACE, which is why I call her that.
yes. Some people think that calling her a squirrel relates in some way to her being Asian, they think that for some people disliking her isn't because she's a terribly written character, and the actress isn't that skilled, it's because she's an Asian woman. I never made that connection, and I dislike someone telling me I'm racist when they have no idea what I've personally experienced in terms of racism.
Ah, *thank* you! See, you don't necessarily have to like a character to write them favorably. Pete could have been so great, if they'd actually had more eps where he and Clark were really buddies, or if they provided Pete with a real life. He should have been the second most important character--had more conflict with Lex, had a good relationship with Lana, you know?
I watch few eps with Whit for that reason--I don't really care for him on Smallville, but I love him in fic. :)
I dislike the character of Lana. She's hella badly written. That said, I don't mind KK and think she's gorgeous.
The character of Pete could have been all right, if the actor who played him hadn't sucked to high heaven. I cringed through all his scenes because they pretty much could have had a stagehand come on and read those lines and they would have sounded less wooden. Every time I think I don't hate Pete, I go back and see an episode from one of the earlier seasons and remember how unbearable the actor is.
Also:
I think both Chloe and Lionel should have died several seasons back, for plot reasons.
Tom Welling still ain't a great actor. And he still looks like a JCPenney mannequin to me.
Michael Rosenbaum's acting hasn't been too hot of late, either. I can't tell if he just can't act evil or he's just phoning it in.
However, none of the bad acting on the show held a candle to the actor who played Jonathan Kent. o.O Martha Kent really went sour her last season too, like she'd inherited the 'suck' mantle or something. Also, she wore waaaaaaaaaaay too much make-up. It made her look like a corpse.
Oh, and I think the actress who plays Supergirl is the ugliest female cast member by a significant margin. The dude who played Aquaman was the ugliest male. I think I'm racist against blonds.
I can't come up with any shallow complaints against Lois or Jimmy, though. Clearly, I fail. :(
Ooooch, I'll just ignore the terrible thing you said about my beloved Thomas, though I have to admit Michael did seem a little less than interested in some eps--though not lately, I feel. He's a *very* good actor in my opinion. People always say that John and Mikey are the real actors on the show, but it's true--they are the best. In my opinion, of course. I also thought that Pete wasn't too bad, and when he got a chance, he acted his little butt off. When he got the chance.
Acting wise KK is passable--barely--but it's true, she's a beautiful woman, and it's more apparent in different photo shoots and in candids than it is in the show.
I can't stand the way they write Lana ... if they wrote her better than I might like her ... but there's also the fact that she makes those faces ... and then she's Hamsterina!!!
Personally I can't take Lana Lang, not only is she badly written. But she whines a lot, and her presence seems to possess the ability to force those around to become whinier.
In every scene she either over acts or under acts, she sucks the life out of every episode she’s in, forcing it to become yet another instalment of the ever running LANA SHOW.
My main problem with Lana is that she’s such a one dimensional Barbie-like type character. She’s constantly being reinvented, and you can usually tell who she’s going to be for an episode by the clothes she wearing and the way hr hair is done….
i hate what the show did with the lana character, making her the center of every little thing. kristin's being part-asian has nothing in the world to do with that.
as others said above, i like pete when you write him! actually, i didn't dislike him on the show, but i didn't get far enough into my dvds to see the part where he skipped town.
Until last night, I didn't even know she was Asian. I mean, I thought it was just something she said to look cooler, you know, like people who say they're an eighth Indian or whatnot just to seem--whatever? More interesting?
I got a bit confused because, to the best of my knowledge, people never called Lana a squirrel because of KK's facial features. It was the way that KK used to screw up her face when acting, and people saw it as making funny squirrelly faces. I never saw it as having anything to do with how KK's features are set out though, just the way that KK acted back in seasons 1-3
I don't even dislike Lana any more, and I never have called her a squirrel, so I don't consider myself to be having a knee-jerk reaction to the suggestion that using the squirrel term might make you a racist. The arguments just hasn't yet convinced me that there's any connection. But then the name-calling has already began, so it's no longer an exchange of ideas (well if it ever was), it's one side being seen as blinded to the truth :/
Yes, that's why I called her Hamsterina--she doesn't look rodent like in the least bit--she's actually a very pretty girl--but that espression she used to make--oy!
Oh yeah, beacause Pete was so "Everyblackman." I've noticed Sam's having a busy career playing a gay man on various shows lately...almost makes me want to go back and look at the early shows. *G*
I know, right? Poor Lex. That's why I ahve to keep writing these AUs so's I can fix it!
Say, is it just me, or is the story times around LJ really slowing down? No one's commenting or reccing...could it be the holidays, or the strike? *looks over shoulder...* or the Langoliers?
I'm half asian myself, my mom was Korean so I don't dislike the character of Lana for any racial reason. I just don't like her because she acts like a holier then thou twit. I just went off on a tangen on mskatej's journal and don't want to repeat it all but. But I mean really the girl seriously believes that there are rules for her, which really don't exist and rules for everyone else which do. I mean ... ugh.
Well, me, I find Kate a lot of fun to read, even if I don't agree with her all the time, but I don't feel like I have to agree with someone to like them. This mess going on now, well. I really felt this response was a little over the top. The original post was thoughtful, and way less inflammatory. Being mixed myself, black and Austrian--I'd be an idiot to to dislike anyone because of race, or belittle anyone for that reason.

But he's so cute and compact next to Clark. And without him, we don't get the cute urban gems like "That's whack" or "man" a trillion times.
