This is the response I got to Paris, an old Clex story of mine:

Sicko writer. Yuk. :(

This was my response to that comment:

Non-con
Incest
Drugged Sex
Dubious Consent
Prostitution
Alternate Universe
Familial Abuse

Did none of those tags give you any warning of what the subject matter would be? At any rate, thank you for your articulate and concise review of the story.

Normally I don't engage these folks, but that just made me crack up--I'm reading my mail and I burst into laughter when I read that. And then, I got a little bitchy as you can see.

The story isn't the best, I'd be the first to admit it. Plus, it was written back in the day, when you could write stuff that seemed terribly naughty but is really pretty tame by today's standards. I didn't reread the fic--I don't think I could, I mean, it's really, really early fic! As the commenter put it, "yuck." No, pardon me--"Yuk."

If I'd posted it with the manip that inspired the story, I probably would have been able to save this poor person's eyes. :)

It's probably just me, but AO3 seems recently infected with juvenile trolls. The comments I've read till now on my own and others' work have been civil, even if unapproving, and with a degree of, oh, sentence-making.

In the last month or so, though, text and tweet-speek seem to have invaded, with bad spelling and some viciously malicious sentiments, expressed in sentence fragments, sometimes just in four or five unrelated words. I fear for the language. I don't think these are readers, honestly. I think they're feral children who've found new grounds to troll.

I didn't know there was a rash of this idiocy! If so, I think it is children, and they're probably spurring each other on, hoping to stir up trouble. I mean, really--it was *such* a stupid comment all I could do was laugh and slap back a little. When they get really vicious, I don't respond, hopefully nipping that crap right in the bud.

Ach, I could tell this was someone who had no idea what This Thing of Ours was all about. It's the fandom folks, the ones who write cruel comments designed to hurt, who make me want to go back to bed and pull the covers over my head and stay there forever. :)

I don't even reply, just delete and brood the rest of the night. Mine for one of my Colin Luthor stories just said, "Kinda faggish, you know." Ok? Correction, dear reader, really really GAY! Like, gay on top of gay with a dash of gay gay gay sprinkled on top. The epithet is what's probably supposed to piss me off & it does, but what gets me is the "you know" bit. Is that a conversation starter? Are we debating the veracity of the statement? Is it Valley Girl Speak? All I picture in my head is some blonde WASP with a cocktail in hand saying to her frenemies, "Kinda faggish, you know," and then tittering drunkenly into her fake boobs.

In short: people AARRRRRGH!!!!!

Yep, those are the sort of comments people are getting. Those aren't fans, those are people who really have no idea what this is all about.

I wish I could remember who posted the article about a class in fanfic, where part of the course requirement was to read and comment on fanfic. The comments weren't examined--they just had to comment, period. So, you have a lot of people who don't get it, taking what they think is an easy class becaue fanfic? Ha-Ha! Plus, they're no doubt thrilled with the added bonus of getting credit for being a dick to faceless strangers. I'll bet they pass the word on to their small-minded friends, so they can come in and be obnoxious to strangers as well.

It's probably best not to respond to those, but you have to remember, they are not the people who count, not at all. We writing to like-minded folks, not the world at large.

Part of the benefit of AO3 is the eight hundred billion tags that can be put on stories. If people choose not to read them--and I admit I sometimes skim them if there are close to eight hundred billion used--then that is on them. At least the barely coherent comment means you know the person is nowhere near your level, and not worthy of your time. There's no evidence they even read the actual story. Don't worry about them!

Missing tags has lead to some hilarious reading adventures. :D

LOLOLOL People who read things they don't like AFTER reading all the warnings need to be stuck with visual and audio from those stories in their minds forever! MWHAHAHAHAHA!!!

I don't think I ever read that one, at least I don't remember it, but that was probably because of Lucas. He creeped me out way to much.

Your reply was lovely and bitingly sarcastic, which comes as no surprise. If it were me I think I would have gone with 'dont like dont read.' It's appropriate, as articulate and concise as their comment to you, and has an added benefit of being a part of the vernacular of the reviewer's demographic, specifically self-important teenaged girls.

Butting in here to say that the way those comments make some writers feel is exactly why when I get something like that on one of my stories I tend to set the troll on fire with a flamethrower. Unsolicited criticism is trashy as hell. Try not to let it get to you. For every dick who has something mean to say there are at least two people who liked what you wrote, and you should keep writing regardless because IT MAKES YOU HAPPY.

See you are way nicer than me when this shit happens. My responses tend to sound something like "FUCK YOU , YOU IGNORANT FUCK-WIT STOP BEING A DICK TO PEOPLE WHO WRITE FOR FUN! ALSO GO FUCK YOURSELf"

Then they get a lecture about the proper etiquette around unsolicited con-crit in fanfic, because I AM a Mom. But also kind of an asshole

Thanks for this boost! But, I'm shy and scared of people, so I'm coming to you for flame help the next time I get trolled :)

My experience on lj has been--if you don't like it (or are lazy :) you just don't comment. AO3 seems to breed more antagonism. It's why I'm extremely hesitant to post anything on tumblr because the reblogging thing makes it easy to expose our fandom quirks to the world, and I just don't need the angst.

ADORED THIS LINE ! At any rate, thank you for your articulate and concise review of the story.
****************

Since obviously this person was incapable of reading and actually understanding the warnings.... I am astounded they were capable of even reading such a tale!! Possibly they have a PA who reads to them!!! What a troll!

People like that rank just below the group of commenters who are incapable of saying anything more than..."hurry up and write some more" in response to a good writer, who generously uses their own free time and lovely thought processes to produce 5,000-10,000 chapters to share with others. Where do these people come from? Obviously neither group has any appreciation for someone else's hard work!

Thank you!

I really couldn't get angry at this comment--it was obviously someone who had no idea what this is all about. I did get upset with the person who decided that they needed to write a PSA about a fic of mine, because it wasn't the light-hearted, amusing fare they thought I usually wrote--tiny did they realize that dub-connish, angsty tales laced with a bit of violence and pain are really my usual thing. :D
