Sam was a hulk, unstoppable, and I do think there has to be something more in him to go from 'can't walk, leave me' to fighting, walking, driving and killing 3 werewolves. On the other hand, his brother was in danger, and being protective can move people to do amazing things, and the Winchesters have a lot of experience pushing themselves to the limit and beyond.

I love how much faith Dean has in Sam. It's no longer about protecting his little brother, it's about protecting each other as equals, trusting each other to do their part. It took years, intense ups and downs, and there's a maturity, you're right, like they've settled into their final forms (like daemons! - nerd-me exclaims, excitedly).

Which might, to some extent, explain some of the 'ending' feelings I was having.
