Actually that part I buy. With someone to care about from early on, I can see Lex never having developed the reckless spirit.
What I don't buy is that Bruce doesn't show up when Lex is in the hospital and set things right. Clark was going to call him right? Oh, an Clark watching Lex being raped tears, begging, and Luke making the drugging comment? Clark still can't see through it when he had already been having his suspicions about luke's veracity?
