Beautiful Things Part Two
8/17/05 10:49 pmMy sister called me tonight. We talked for an hour.
It's the first time ever that she's called me since she was moved to assisted living. Not only did she call me, we talked for an hour! Usually our conversations consist of her telling me she's tired , I love you bye--but tonight, we talked about the kids and our friends and we laughed a lot, a whole lot...wow. It was like a miracle. And it made me realize I was being an asshole. so , yeah, it was a beautiful thing, and it made me happy.
Sure, she asked me every five minutes what we were talking about, but here's the cool part, she was aware that she was forgetting. She said she had a swiss cheese memory, like Sam Becket, lol! it's funny sometimes what she does remember. She couldn't believe her child was 20, not 8 years old. Sounds sad, but we made each other laugh about it. Ah well. It was nice. It's temporary but still, really nice!
So anyway--beautiful thing part two! let's see what other beautiful things I can come up with! *grin*

8/18/05 04:33 am (UTC)Some people might find you morbid, but I don't;)
My mother and I did a *lot* of laughing when she was dying of cancer. A lot. We also cried, but mostly separately. But when we were together we remained our sarcastic, quipping selves. Seven years later, 99% of what I remember of that time is the laughter. It took me a couple of years to get to that point, but I did.
((hugs)) again.
Might I suggest something? Visit your sister and record some conversations with her or ask her to tell you some stories and record them. You'll enjoy being able to listen to her voice years later. I have a recording of me talking with my grandfather when I was 3 or 4 years old. He got me to tell him a whole long story and recorded it. He gave it to me when I graduated from high school. I love it because he's gone, but I can still hear his voice and listen to him laugh.
