On the up side? Lucas is never going to believe that Lex wanted to leave him now. Which, although bad for the planet, is good for him. He would break into a thousand tiny pieces and turn into a drooling, gibbering idot if he let himself conciously believe Lex didn't love him and would actually leave him for Superman or Clark. He needs something to hold on to to be able to subvert the part of him that *knows*.
