Y'know I found out something interesting, it might be just co-incidence, but when Matthew Shepard was found tied to the fence, he was first thought to be a scarecrow.
"Human rights activist and singer Melissa Etheridge wrote the song "Scarecrow" in tribute to Shepard, referring to his initially being mistaken for a scarecrow when he was found."
And the time is such that I wonder if somehow this ended up going into the making of smallville....
