why did Foine set Clark up to hate Lex, plant the seed of 'Lex is the Great Satan' in his pretty head when they knew he wouldn't be able to hurt him in the end--in fact, apparently needed him not to hurt Lex? *is confused*

Maybe not so Clark would hate Lex but so he could see how Lex and Clark responded to each other? If Clark didn't take the bait, maybe Lex would prove useful.
