I think, that in his youth he acted out of what he thought was right. I think when you're young, the world is much clearer than it is when you're older. He's always wanted to be with Lex, that's one reason why he's never had a relationship with anyone. And now, time is marching on, and the little girl decided to meddle in things, and now they're thinking what if. Lex isn't really as jealous of the guys as it might appear. There's no reason for him to be. His choice was not to be involved with anyone. Clark on the other hand, in my world, is a very affectionate person, he'd never be satisfied with an escort/date sort of situation. He likes people, and needs contact, emotional and physical.

Lex does understand that Clark had his reasons to leave. He's hurt that Clark left him but he knows why.

There's a whole other reason that he doesn't believe Clark, and it will be clear in the next bit. Lex is paranoid, and not all that convinced that Clark loves him for him. It's also the reason Clark has to do the work. But it's funnier this way, and I love the idea of Clark wooing Lex back.
I have no idea if that helped explain some questions, but don't worry, Clark will be fine in the end!
