I think my sense that Rowling finally learned to write in this last novel arises partly from exactly what you're saying here--that she didn't work so madly to plug every single hole. She let the reader breathe life into the spaces on his or her own.
And yeah, the fanfic possibilities are huge. There are plenty of suggested, but unexplored, byways, and no shortage of slashy subtextual goodness one could explore.
As to it being a thank you note to fanfic writers, I've heard or read that JKR hates them. Man! To me, having fanfic written about my fiction would be the highest praise. And then all sorts of journals could be summarily deleted from LJ. Wouldn't that be cool??
