PART 2

“ Lex, if I tell you this, it will change every single thing you think you know. About me, about Smallville, probably yourself.”

Lex had no doubt that whatever it was that Clark was keeping from him had to be something--amazing. He’d been close to proof of that so many times, only to have it slip away, or be torn from him in some painful and humiliating way. Some times the struggle to forgive Clark was almost more than he could bear, but at the end of the day, he wanted to be with him more then anything else, wanted that even more than the satisfaction of his curiosity. Clark’s friendship was like a lifeline to Lex. He had no idea how it had become an essential part of his life but it was as necessary as breathing to him now.

“Clark. I’ve resigned myself to the fact that there are some things I just won’t know. Let’s just, please, leave it at that.”

The words stabbed him as he spoke them, disappointment making him feel a little bitter. It didn’t matter, he planned to live with never knowing the truth...at any rate, planned to try really hard.

Clark moved over to Lex, nearly touching him.

” Lex, I do care about you, and I care what you think--I… you’re my best friend….”

That was all he said, didn’t move, just looked into Lex’s eyes and waited.
Ok, that nearly worked as a distraction, Lex thought cynically, but on another level, his mind ran wild. Could he mean, is he telling me--what? He ran a quick mental check on his expression and decided he looked calm, and slightly interested. He’d hate to think that he could break training so miserably as to let his emotions reveal themselves.

Judging by the very worried look on Clarks face, he’d done an excellent job of concealing his feelings…He needed to know just what Clark was trying to tell him. He began to spin various plans designed to make this happen, when he heard Clark say simply, “I’m not human.”

The fuck? Clark was maybe a mutant, but it didn’t make him not human--oh.

“Shit.”

Clark’s head jerked up. That wasn’t quite the reaction he’d expected. Lex said it so…matter of factly. As though he’d dropped his ice cream, instead of having a bomb dropped on him.

“ Ok, Clark. First and most important, I… care about you too,” Clark’s smile warmed his heart, and Lex had to respond, an axe murderer would have smiled back at Clark. “Secondly, what the heck do you mean not human? Are you-- have you been so altered by these meteor fragments that you’re no longer…”

“ Lex. I was never human. I’m an alien. You know...not of this Earth? I brought the damn rocks with me when I crashed on this planet, when I killed Lana’s parents, put that kid in a coma, and …altered you forever. That was all me....” Clark was looking away from Lex again by the time he finished, tears in his eyes.

“Clark! Look at me. Clark!” He had to grab Clark’s chin in his hand and yank him around to face him.

“*You* are not at fault. How the hell can you blame a baby, *yourself,* for those events? Shit happens, Clark. To put it inelegantly. Do I wish it hadn’t happened?” He stepped back from Clark and dragged a shaking hand swiftly across his head. “Hell yeah. Do I wish you never came here? Hell no! Ok, my price was --painful, though not anywhere near the same league as Lana’s loss of her parents. But knowing that barrage brought my very best friend? The price I paid was more then worth it.”

Clark threw himself at Lex and for a heart-stopping moment he thought the boy was about to kiss him, but he drew him into a hug instead. One part of Lex’s mind marveled at how aroused a simple hug could make him, another part thought of the consequences to Clark and his family in letting another person in on his secret. Clark had too many potential hostages to his secret. He needed Lex’s help whether he knew it or not. Lex loosened into Clark’s warm arms and smiled as the boy stroked big hands across his back. Lex was made for this type of work.

Lex’s feeling of relaxed self-confidence lasted until he shut the door behind Clark. All at once the enormity of the situation hit him like a dash of ice water. What the hell am I going to do? He flung himself hard onto the sofa and scrubbed his hands viciously across his face.He sighed so loudly that he had to laugh at the theatricality of it. God, I’m nuts, maybe Clark is nuts. I *am* nuts, I didn’t even ask him for proof that he’s an alien. It just explains- *everything*! All my questions, all the weird shit, its kind of … Lex leaped up, and began pacing All right, let’s get this in order. First, Clark’s parents are his biggest weakness. How do we protect them?

Obviously, taking them out of the picture, hiding them, wasn’t going to work. No way would the Kent’s agree to it, and where were they supposed to go? The Kent’s had to remain in place. It would probably be better if they were unaware of the situation themselves…He’d come to know them quite well as he and Clark had gotten closer. He worked pretty hard to earn their trust. The hurdle of the Luthor name had been a large one, but they finally came to see him as Lex, a person, not just Lionel’s son. Martha treated him almost as well as Clark. She even knew some of his favorite foods, and that was the best sign that they'd accepted him. And Jonathan, well that *had* been a struggle. The man tested his patience at every turn. And apparently it had been a test, one he’d passed if not with flying colors, then well enough to win a grudging respect from him. Jonathan had even begun to joke with him a bit, Clark happily being the butt of a few gentle gibes between himself and Jonathan. They were finally able to accept that Clark wanted to be his friend-- Well, all that’s going to blow up when Jonathan finds out his son’s confession… why did Clark decide to tell him now? Did his parents*know* that Clark wanted Lex to know? Did he have to hide it from them? How long, until his parents shuffled off this mortal coil? God!

Shit. And his father. He was probably the the major threat he needed to protect the Kent’s against. The minute his father found out about his feelings for Clark, he’d dig up anything he could on him, to use the boy against him, or just to punish him for letting his emotions run away with him. Dad felt any genuine deep feeling was a loaded gun in the hands of one’s enemies. What he might discover in the process....

“ Bruce.”

Just saying his name out loud grounded Lex for a minute.

I’ve got to get in touch with him. I know he can help me. I know he will help me.

*********

Bruce looked mildly interested through out Lex’s recitation of events. Lex grinned at him. He knew that look. It meant that Bruce was thinking hard about the problem he’d brought him. For the first time in days Lex felt the knot in his gut begin to relax. He sighed quietly but Bruce heard him and smiled so sweetly at him that for a moment Lex wavered. After all, there had been a point in his life when Bruce was all he could think of. Bruce stood and walked toward the doorway.

“ Come on. Time for bed.”

Lex opened his mouth but Bruce just smiled. “ Separately.”

Lex could feel his ears warm and hated that uncontrollable show of emotion. It bothered him that he would kind of like to get into Bruce’s bed, even though he truly felt that Clark and he were meant to be. Kismet, destiny, whatever. That boy was meant to be his. And he belonged to Clark, no denying that, even if Clark didn’t know. But. Would it be so wrong, just for one night?

Bruce paused at the doorway, said goodnight over his shoulder and went upstairs without waiting for a reply. Lex stood for a moment, reached in his pocket for his phone, dialed Clark’s number. The phone rang a few times, and Lex could feel his heart beat harder the longer he waited.

“ Kent residence,” Martha answered. “ Who’s speaking please?”

Lex was relieved and disappointed. “ Hello, Mrs. Kent, is Clark there?”

“ Oh! Lex, how are you? No, he’s not here, He’s at the movies with Lana.” She sounded happy for Clark, he thought, as his chest did a weird constricting thing that left him briefly breathless “Oh, that’s …that’s fine! How nice for Clark.” He tried to match her enthusiasm, but it rang false to his ears, and he thought Martha must have heard something in his voice also. She hesitated before she spoke again.

“ Well, Pete and Chloe are going also, I imagine they’re going to meet at the movies.” She paused a second and continued,” I know Clark will be glad when you get back, he misses you, dear.”

Lex had to blink back tears, and was angry with himself for being so weak.

“ Yes, well, I miss you all, too.” And it was true; he missed her, wished he could throw himself in her lap and beg her to help him win Clark. Yeah, that should go over really well! For the whole five minutes Jonathan would let me live.

He listened to Bruce’s footsteps move away, and was pulled back to the phone by Martha’s voice.

“…tell him you called, Lex?” He thought, and answered, “ No, I don’t think that’s necessary, Mrs. Kent, I’ll call tomorrow. ” They made their good byes and Lex hung up. His heart sat in his throat, a pain filled lump that he had to struggle to breathe through. He flipped his phone shut and tossed it into the chair. He looked towards the stairs, and sighed.
