Alex casually admitting he was there for the hell of it, because he want to 'know,' was a wonderful reference to the ever-inquisitive Lex we're familiar with.
Alex blew a smoke ring, chased it with a few smaller ones, and said, "nosce te ipsum, my friend."
Pete snorted, "Know thyself, eh? You think you do?"
Unexpectedly, Pete's teasing remark opened a well of sadness. "I don't think anyone else cares to," he sighed quietly. That is such a poignant set of lines - they make me ache for Alex. His life, in a way, seems so much *less* than Pete's right then.
