m/m sex was against the law back then. (I think it's still illegal in Kansas.) Also, black/white relationships were against the law then and were until 1967 when the law was considered unconstitutional. See, I wasn't supposed to exist when I was born.
I must confess, I don't know the actual legal punishment for either crimes(too lazy to look it up)--except Pete could be in danger of being killed for what he's doing. During the years I'm writing in, folks were turning a blind eye to gays, or exploiting them for amusement value--a *very* brief moment in history. And I should say, even though I'm saying Smallville and Metropolis, which are supposed to be Kansas, I actually always write Metropolis more like New York--or does that confuse everything even more? *G*
