he knew that Whit couldn't afford to have people think that about him. Clark knew that somehow, some way, he was going to pay for what Whit did.

So this is how Clark comes to leave Smallville? God, that poor alien boy! But you wrote it so well that I felt for Whitney, too. I hate to say it, but I've been in Whit's place a few times. . . wonderful, horrible chapter, if you know what I mean. Thanks for posting!
