Title: Ripley ficlet
Pairing: Lex/Clark, Rip/Greg/Irving
Rating: G

Irving was standing outside on the balcony, getting one last look at the ocean. His bag, such as it was, was packed. He was ready to go. He felt hollow on the inside, and like he was made of stone on the outside.

The footfall on the tiles was much softer than he expected. He wondered how Clark managed to land so soundlessly in those tall red boots. The cape settled around his ankles with a little swirl. Quietly dramatic, impressive. Like Clark.

"Ready?"

"Yeah, I am. I appreciate you coming to pick me up, Clark."

Clark tilted his head and looked at Irving. "Don't be silly, it's what family does, right? Pick you up at the airport, drop you at the train…swoop you up and fly you home in the middle of the night…" Clark grinned. "Where do you want me to take you Irving?"

"Some place in Metropolis. A hotel, something. I need to be close, but not home. Not just yet."

"Okay. You ready?" Clark grabbed the bag and the man, and leapt up into the sky, rocketing straight through clouds, up high and fast, leaving Irving light-headed and gasping for air. He leveled out, and said, "Relax. Enjoy the view. See that down there?"

Irving saw lights, thousands of lights, flickering as they flew over the city. "Isn't our city beautiful? I love looking at it from up here. Quiet. It's not until you get close that you see how many seemingly discordant elements have to mesh to make this picture of calm, serene beauty…"

Irving could hear Clark's small sigh, and made a sound of assent as his mind raced. Clark could be telling him that true love didn't run smooth and uneventfully, that it had moments of ugly as well as beauty. Or he could be telling him that he'd drop his ass from this high to the street if he tried to lay a lip on Lex again… he was not about to ask.

Clark set him softly down near a hotel Irving chose, and smiled. "Call us, we'll have lunch or do a movie night. That'd be fun. And Irving…it's going to be all right. I promise you. Things *will* get better." He gently squeezed Irving's shoulder. "You'll do the right thing. You'll know what to do."

Irving watched him fly away again. His 'father-in-law'. Superman. Thank god for high moral character---Irving knew his little stunt must have made him steam—there was no doubt in his mind Lex had told him. He closed his eyes and said a brief little prayer of gratitude that Clark liked him as much as he did….

Now, all he had to do was figure out his next step. Easy.

good, i'm glad clark was gentle with him and called him family. that's a good sign!

in light of your post about wanting notice of little mistakes: "He squeezed gently squeezed Irving's shoulder." tiny redundancy there. (now i feel pushy!)

Poor Irving. Everybody's on his case, and it's not like he's the only one in the 'ship!
Damnit.
*pets him*

Irving is so lucky that Clark didn't drop him into oblivion. A lot of father-in-laws wouldn't have been half as nice. *g*

Hehe, your Clark is a good guy ;)

BTW 'Danny the dog' was excellent, I didn't realise it was going to be Britty. I love Bob Hoskins. I bet you've seen Mona Lisa. That was my first contact with anything so gritty and twisted.

Oh Lord, Irving tut tut tut. No one can blame him though, Lex is sex on a stick. Maybe that's why Clark is being so nice, he understands the attraction

I really feel for Irving. I mean, for heaven's sake--it's LEX. Mr. "I am so sexy I make bunnies look frigid" Luthor. I'd kiss him! Or lick him, or what have you and....well probably not with Clark there but I'd be thinking it!:)

Loved this :)

So cute!

If the situation were reversed, with Lex having Irving at his mercy after Irving had made a play for Clark, I KNOW what Lex would really be saying! *eg*
