I'm sorry I took so long to answer--with everything going on for as minute there, this slipped through the cracks!
I think about this Sam as wanting *very* much not only to be an average guy, but a good person too. Only, he's got these little things that keep him from bring exactly who he wants to be, and in that way, he's not much different than anyone else. He's not a perfect guy by any means and not even what he does for Dean is entirely unselfish. Still, he's a pretty good brother.
And yeah, this is the story with the unhappyish ending! ;)
