I agree with this idea. I'm totally wiling to hop on the suspension of reality train with you! But I think the biggest stumbling block for me would be understanding why John didn't just call social services. John seems like a guy that believes in family above all, but also that hard knocks are part of life.
I've been trying to brainstorm ideas for how, but don't have a good sense of what's happening in the story. It's possible that John might be willing to keep the kid for a) reasons of revenge (the kid's--if it fit with John's reasons) or b) if he judges that the kid is going to get in more trouble trying to hunt ghosts, etc while placed with non-hunter foster parents or in the system. I don't know if either would work. I do think that John is not a real soft touch. He's had too many hard knocks to think anyone can really be shielded from them. Good luck, sweetie!
