So, lately I've fallen a little bit in love with Bones. I'm watching the reruns and for some strange reason, as much as Bones annoyed me when I first tried to watch the series, I find myself kind of loving her now. Weird. I'm all Awwwww over her. hmm.

I also love In Plain Sight. I really like Mary--she's bitchy and mouthy, she doesn't always win and sometimes comes off not very likable, and that's what makes me like her. These are my fun to watch shows, like Rescue Me and Fringe and Leverage--shows that give me pleasure but I'm not moved to being fannish about them. Though Leverage comes close because of Kane, and my beloved Aldis.

Speaking of being fannish about a show, (and for me, being fannish means imagining relationships between the male leads)not that many guys make me think, 'oh yeah, a few beers and a snowed in cabin and they'd so be doing it'--there's Clark and Lex, Dean and Sam (what?), Castiel and Dean (i know! but really, i didn't see it, not when everyone was writing it at day one) Xander and Spike, Angel and Spike (canon!) I think with them, it's right there on the screen and I don't have to do much to help it along. Hardison and Elliot...yeah, I can see it. :) Whit and Clark...maybe. I like it, I've written it--it's not too much of a stretch.

I never really got the SGA, or the SG-1, and I'm not getting the STreboot pairings, but that just makes all this interesting. What is it that makes someone see the possibilities there? I know the exact moment I thought that Castiel/Dean was more than possible--I blame Misha for that. When Uriel accused Castiel of liking Dean--like it was borderline bestiality and for a second Cas looked guilty and Dean looked floored. That moment made it possible for me. The affection Cas felt for Dean was evident, to me at least. And that's what I need to see--some strong emotional attachment. And it doesn't hurt that all of these guys I consider to be hot to death. For me, it's always about the shallow! *G*

Well, for me, besides the ones you named, I go for good ol' Heroes' slash of the Nathan/Peter variety (I know!), and Fast and Furious with Dom and Brian. . . all four guys I consider sex on legs. :) But there's also some definite tension in both those pairings, with shared looks that didn't have to be there and in the case of tFatF, an immediate rapport that defies pretty much all logic. Like Lex and Clark, in some ways. :)

Are you a Burn Notice or True Blood fan at all? Those are my summer fun to watch shows!

What do I see in SGA's John and Rodney? The differences between them can be huge (military/academic, rude/polite, athletic/not) and yet their friendship (and the slash) is built off what they go through together and their personal growth as it happens. I honestly enjoy quite a few gen and team-oriented fics in SGA in addition to the slash simply because they're filled with adventures on different planets, dealing with different cultures and different environments. Of course, there's the science fiction elements too.

Also? When two guys have to punch each other to cover for the hot homoerotic tension that they're totally in denial about. I refer you to Mal and Simon on Firefly.

fannish pairings

Yes, I'm much the same way - (and for me, being fannish means imagining relationships between the male leads).

It's interesting because it's always slightly more than just two hot guys for me - sounds like you're the same. Yet, I saw the potential in Castiel pretty much from the get-go. Here was someone who could stand toe-to-toe with Dean, who wouldn't back down from him, who couldn't be guilted into things like Sam could. And, hey, the whole "I'm the one who gripped you tight and raised you from perdition." Yeah, that pretty much sold me - it was hot, and also, holy crap, powerful. Dean's never really had someone who was an equal to him AND who was also on his side.

John and Rodney - it was the banter that sold me. Two completely different guys, different backgrounds, different interests. On first glance, they wouldn't be friends. Tough military guy, geeky scientist. Except the tough military guy is kind of a geek too, and the scientist can hold his own when his friends are at risk. They balance each other well. I liked the unlikeliness of the two of them, the way they seemed to "get" each other from the beginning.

But yeah, I was never really attracted to the Firefly pairings, although I like the show. Or other pairings people flock to. I do tend to like the main pairings in most fandoms, which does make fannishness easier, but I've got to feel a need to explore the relationship further if I'm going to write about them.

Me too! Which is why my only 'ship is Clex, though I might be starting to take an interest in Dean/Castiel too....

I'm sorry - did you just say Spike and XANDER?!

Yeah, I don't think we can be friends anymore :P

Then again, you have a very good point about Dean and Cas, so I suppose I could let it slide... ;)

I dunno if I should be deep and thinky over this or just random squee.

Even though I love subtext and slash, there are a lot of shows that I just don't see it it. I can see the Leverage slash when I read the fic but it's not something I pick up that often in the show. I'm not sure why. Sam and Dean I read but I don't see it for my own characterization. I've tried but it never works. Cas and Dean I can see but it doesn't rock my world. I'm not into it enough to write it or really get into that aspect of the fandom. Now RPS...Yeah, uh huh, moving on.

I know Angel/Spike is canon and I love Xander and Spike.

I haven't watched SGA enough to say anything about that slash. I never really got into the SG-1 slash, though I think I've watched just about every episode.

STreboot...oh my new obsession. If I can get the characterizations right, this is going to be dangerous to me. Especially now that I'm off the shiny high from SpN and we're in the hiatus. I admit, I didn't really see the slash when I watched it except for a couple of scenes. Then I started reading some seriously good fic and the novelization. The novelization just about make the slash canon. How could I resist? Damn plot tribbles.

Hmm. I sometimes don't see pairings until people write them. Like, I went into Star Trek Reboot expecting to see Kirk/Spock, and although I can kind of see it it doesn't ping for me (maybe because I like Spock/Uhura better), but then I read some Kirk/McCoy and said, "HELL YEAH." (And I actually saw it the second time I saw the movie, but not the first time).

I can relate to the STreboot thing: loved the movie, not terribly inclined to slash (or even overly ship) in any fashion. In fact there are a few shows, which I enjoy tremendously which have some fannish followings, but never seem much inclined ship beyond their respective canons - Kings for one, True Blood for another (I am conent to sit back and enjoy the beauty that is Alexander Skasgard), and even Buffy and friends (though I always saw the potential for Spike/Willow). Maybe it's some self-regulating thing, I have to find time to actually work at work.

Heeeeee.
*spins you*

I adore Rodney/John. There's so many moments. Their *glee* at being geeky together, in *space* together, how John is always 'Rodney', first thing - no body else knows anything, or can fix anything, just Rodney. And! Oh man. There's an ep, later in the series.....fuck, i can't remember the name. But Rodney has some weird brain thing and he's forgetting *everything* but....

When he gets scared? He runs through the halls of Atlantis yelling for *John*. John is the last name on his lips when he's forgotten everyone else. It's just...epic.

And if you want John to do something? Threaten Rodney.
*laaaaa*
*spins you more*

And yes, some pairings just do nothing for me, i not only don't see it, but the actors just....eh. Or! As in the case of some shows, like NCIS? I love them being gen, and ensemble, and *friends*. So much better than lovers.

I'm pretty dumb when it comes to same sex relationships/subtext. I have to be slapped upside the head with an engorged penis before I'll see it. The only show in which I saw it was Xena, and they did the slapping upside the head thing (although with a vagina instead of a penis).

Otherwise I pretty much need people to point it out for me or I miss it (even after it's pointed out I can still miss it). This is one of the reasons I like Torchwood. There's nothing to miss - the man sex is canon! I think I out-shallow you. I started to watch TW (the fandom, not the man) for the man kisses, and continued to watch it for more man kisses. *G*

I'm not a big fan of SpN, but do enjoy the interaction between Castiel and Dean. Holy smokes (no pun intentded) the looks between them are incendiary.

There does need to be some sort of connection between the characters, one of the reasons I love the Clex so much. When I first got into fandom, it was through Star Trek. I thought I'd like the idea of them a lot, but I couldn't really get into it. Maybe they were too firmly entrenched in my mind as simply friends, or maybe because I couldn't see them as anything other than kind of old. Although, this version of McCoy is HOT! I liked him as Cupid/Ceasar, and I like him now.

Okay, I've almost fallen asleep twice while typing this. I'm heading to bed. I just hope the above makes sense.
