I think the 'soulmates' thing simply confirms what we all know - Sam and Dean are each other's one true loves, and they will not *ever* love anyone like they love each other.
And yeah, doesn't have to be sexual - though it so easily can be - but it does mean that any relationship they have outside of each other will always come in just a teeny bit second.
I guess i don't like Dean or Sam with an oc so much just because it makes me sad, because normally those stories are written in such a way that Sam or Dean is kind of...out of the picture, and that's just.... *sniffle*
