one more thing before I go to bed!

Dean's gun has IVORY grips, okay--IVORY. *NOT* mother-of pearl. *Sam's* Taurus has mother-of-pearl grips. These two things are totally NOT ALIKE. NOT ALIKE!!!!

Sorry, it's just one of those irritating things, like 'tow the line', or 'make due' or describing Dean as 'the blond'.

I guess folks just don't really know what ivory is these days. Poor children and their lack of education. Tsk. These kids today, with their texting and murder....

OMG!! What is with the blond thing? In what world is his hair blond? It's not even dark blond. It's brown people!! Even his own wife described it as brown! He's in one show a million years ago where they highlight his hair and he's forever a blond! It's BROWN!

As you can see, you have pushed one of my major buttons. I'm going to go sit in the corner and calm down. Sorry for the disturbance.

RIGHT? I used to think it was my TV because try as I might, I could not see the blonde. When he was a wee twink, maybe.

Dean has brown hair, a little lighter than his brother, but it's brownnnnnn--just like his eyes are just plain green, not the greenest green that ever greened. Though *koff* I might be guilty of that one myself...*

Huh-wha-? How do you even confuse ivory with mother of pearl? (Though I guess some people might get a pass because they didn't notice/don't remember from the show and unsuspectingly trust that other fic authors do remember or did the research. But if it's one of your peeves it's hard to give it a pass (there is a very strong urge in me to close any story that describes Clark's eyes as hazel, no matter how good it is otherwise).

Clark's eyes are definitely green. They always struck me as a pretty clear green.

And mother-of-pearl is just so different than ivory that yes, calling the grips that is just sheer laziness.

OMG, THANK YOU!

Or using pistol, revolver, handgun, interchangeably. Not. Or, or, or...casting silver bullets, of indeterminate caliber, which your character then loads directly into any random weapon, without benefit of casing, powder, primer, or you know, anything that makes ammunition actually *work*.

And can we talk about "free reign"? Ugh.

LOL!!

Okay, I've been guilty of casting bullets and not including cartridges--also misused reign and rein until a kind reader took me to the side and kindly pointed it out, thank goodness! But that's just the thing, isn't it? I'd love to let the writer know that they're misusing a word or getting a phrase wrong but you never know who will take it as a personal attack so I zip my lip and keep on going. Most of the things I know about writing come from my friends, who are the nicest people in the world. Or maybe the bravest, lol!

I'm an old broad, brought up on old books and I still look up phrases I've heard or used forever because better safe than sorry. Or better safe then sorry. *koff*

I'm guilty of calling Dean a blond. Not in fic, because I know better. But if you were to ask me what color his hair is, I'd say blond. Even if he was right in front of me. Even if compared with a color chart. For some reason, his dark hair registers as blond in my brain. I don't know why.

That's so odd! I look at him and I see a brown-haired man. But to me, blonde is bright yellow, and I know people have all these grades and shades of blonde that they see. It's all the same to me!

omg, 'make due' and 'tow the line' are two of my fic peeves! There are several more, but I've tried to block them out of my mind and then one smacks me in the brain in the middle of a fic.

'Make due' tops my list. What the hell is that supposed to mean? When they type it and look at it, what the hell are they thinking? Make due. Sheesh. These things, each and every time, they make the fic stutter for me.

In one of my college courses, the teacher asked us what we should do to become better writers. Most everyone in the class said, "Write," but I said, "Read," and the teacher pointed at me and said, "Exactly."

I think some of these writers have never read anything but fanfic, so they just keep reading and writing the same mistakes over and over, with no idea of the origin or meaning of the phrases.

And I agree, these errors pull me right out of a fic every time.

Well, grip-wise, I suppose someone who's watching on a less than awesome TV, or on a very small screen, might only see that the grips are light in color and not made of metal and just *guess* what they are. And I, for one, have always had trouble distinguishing where the dividing line is between darker shades of blond (sandy, dishwater) and light brown. But "tow the line" and "make due", except in very specific circumstances (say, waterskiing and invoicing), are as wrong as calling a guy in the Army "solider" (unless he can manipulate his own density). :)

you know, I guess the grip thing rives me crazy because I *know* what ivory looks like as opposed to mother-of-pearl, ivory having a matte tone and mother-of-pearl having a sheen to it that even on my crappy-ass TV I could see--but again, I am very familiar with both these things and people younger than me might not be. Who has anything made of ivory these days?

I also have trouble distinguishing all these shades, but Dean's hair seems to dark to be anything but brown. And right now, I want to scream because the D key on my keyboard is not working and it's riving me CRAZY. Kind of OT but I wanted to share.
