I'm working on a story that I like a lot, and I'm trying to decide if I should post it as a WIP or a complete piece. I'm working on it at the speed of negative snail but I'm definitely working on it. What do you say, my friends? Post or not? It's a Sam/Dean domestic AU, chock full of angst and stuff because that is how I roll. Ya'll pretend like it's important and I'll pretend like I'm not needy as hell.
My other child has moved out and our nest is empty. BG and her little dog have left us. The dog's coming back but the kid claims she's not. I don't know--there are roaches in her apartment. We have this thing about roaches like other people have about snakes or serial killers. It's a phobia so bad that therapy would probably be helpful. Can anyone recommend solutions to controlling them? She's in the city in an old apartment building so yeah, odds are it's a losing battle. This whole moving out thing sucks so hard. There are good points but not many. I know she's got to spread her wings but...SNIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIFFF. I miss her. :(
If only I could gather my little chicks and FORCE THEM TO LIVE WITH ME FOREVER!!!!
*koff* Kidding!!

10/19/13 01:13 am (UTC)Aw, empty house. I can't imagine it. *clings to Monstrous*
As for roaches - oh, gods. HAAAAAAAAAAAATE. This is the only thing i know to do to *help*, though it won't fix. Always have rubber stoppers in the sink drains - they can crawl up and down. Keep the trash as closed up as possible and take it *out* as often as possible. Leave NO food out, nothing at all. Wipe up all counters right away. Put stuff like cereal in rubber-maid type containers and make sure they seal.
Keep everything *clean*. Don't leave clothes or anything on the floor, they like to climb inside. Put shoes on a shoe tree. And short of putting a line of silicone around every baseboard and window, spray for the little bastards and don't push your furniture up against the wall.
Also, if she can stand it, find out what *kind* they are. Some are more horrifyingly difficult to kill than others.
*smooches you*

10/19/13 02:24 am (UTC)Will it help if exterminators come? I'll pay for a monthly service for her if it will. I'll tell her all this other stuff though. I know about sealing up food and she should get a better garbage can. We can definitely caulk every baseboard, I'm down with that!
I want her back home so bad, it's stupid! I LOVE having my babies home with me. I know they're safe and happy and I don't have to worry. Besides that they're so much fun to hang out with. I really need to make some friends. It's just that most people my age are just...you know. They're nice and all but.
On the story tip, yeah, I only have about 7000 readable words and a few vignettes. And it's just a diary of what happens from day to day, so possibly boring to anyone but me. :D

10/19/13 02:31 am (UTC)*pets you*
The most common indoor roaches are German cockroaches. Mostly because they're tough and reproduce like bunnies on speed.
*shudders*
http://www.orkin.com/cockroaches/german-cockroach/
Yes, there's a picture.
And yes, monthly zapping would be good, as would the sealing of the baseboards and whatnot. They can get into *lots* of little places. They are detestable. Read that link for 'signs', though - she might only have a few moving in from cold outside/warm inside, and not actually be *infested*. Some of it depends on how clean her neighbor's homes are, too, which is the sucky part of apartment dwelling.
I totally get wanting her back. I want Elf back from spending the night! It's just...better when they're close.
*smishes you*
Heeee. Probably it's fun as hell, but yeah - might wait until it's a little higher word count that you can post over a couple days, and that way we don't feast and then famine. :)

10/19/13 02:38 am (UTC)Good advice all around, beloved! *HUGS*

10/19/13 01:15 am (UTC)As for the roaches? I've always heard filling a lid (like a mayonnaise or soda pop lid) with boric acid and placing them in the corners of your rooms. ALWAYS AWAY FROM THE FUR BABY, though. Make sure the pup can't get anywhere near it, but it should make the roach problem disappear. Also, there are raid squares you can buy and place in the corners of the rooms, again away from the fur baby.
*Hugs you* about the empty nest.

10/19/13 02:32 am (UTC)We did hear about the boric acid but were afraid for the pup. I'll tell her about this--if she puts it under things it should be good--he really doesn't like things over his head, hah!
Oh, gosh, you have no idea how much this whole month has just sucked for me! At least I don't have to pretend like it's happy times for me, lol!

10/19/13 02:53 am (UTC)As for the BIG 'R' problem, I was thinking. I once knew a person who used to put all her food "garbage" - (chicken bones, wrappers, uneaten food stuffs, etc) in the freezer until trash pickup day, that way it would keep the creepy crawlies away as they would have nothing to tempt them. Of course, it being an apartment with other tenants doing their own thing, that makes it all the more difficult because she can't control how they handle their own food situation.
** Hugs you some more. **

10/19/13 03:13 am (UTC)That freezer thing might not be a bad idea. Anything to help!
sometimes just having someone as excited as you are helps the creative process.
*nods* I feel like when I started out I only needed me, but now it takes a village to write my damn stories. :) I do tend to wander, or the point of my story will sometimes disappear without me realizing it, if that makes sense.

10/19/13 02:43 am (UTC)RE: cockroaches I totally agree on the sealed garbage I had them when I was going to college and they're horrible they love paper don't leave newspapers looseleaf paper any kind of paper out they go for it like white on rice. I kept all my food in sealed containers or in the fridge I even kept the couple of plates and cups are used in a hanging basket midair because they'll crawl all over your dishes in the dark cupboard.
One thing I found sort of helpful is they hate salt and if you can get the cockroaches under control in your apartment sometimes what you do get his cockroaches coming in from other apartments so I bought a big bag of salt and I went along the baseboard of my entire apartment and across the front door of the apartment and Ran a really heavy line of salt almost like supernatural around all the moldings on the baseboard and they hate it and I would come home from class and they be dead cockroaches at my front door where some had tried to climb under the door through the salt and the salt got in their carapaces and they dried out! Blocking the sinks and the tub is also another good idea because that's the other place you find them is crawling up out of the sink. Cockroaches yuck!!!

10/19/13 03:19 am (UTC)I'm gonna hold off posting until I know exactly how Sam feels about things at least. *G* That should take me a chapter or three.

10/20/13 02:35 am (UTC)But Garbage sealing and food sealing is the first step. You have to keep all foods and spill cleaned up. My apartment initially also had mice and I had to de-fecalize my stove, they'd formed a nest under the cavity below the burners.... now that was fun.
LOL, it is sounding like the apartment from hell, but after a week or so it wasn't You just have to be sooooper diligent.
The funny thing was this was one of the last apartments I looked at. Another one I looked at when i walked in there was about one dead cockroach per inch on the floor of the whole apartment including inside the cupboards. The landlord said they'd just bombed the place, but I didn't take the apartment. If there were this many dead ones in evidence how many millions had escaped to the neighbours during the bombing and were camping out ready to retake the apartment.
Every time they bombed this apartment I'm talking about the really swanky, expensive apartments around us would be flooded with cockroaches for a couple of weeks. They are an evil demonic menace and will probably rule the planet at some point.... hopefully after I'm gone O.o

10/20/13 02:39 am (UTC)I googled "natural roach killer borax"
10/19/13 05:24 am (UTC)http://www.wikihow.com/Get-Rid-of-Roaches
Please note, however, this is not entirely safe around animals and children, who might not know that you shouldn't eat it. Save the Little Dogs! :)

Re: I googled "natural roach killer borax"
10/19/13 05:37 am (UTC)Thanks so much! I sent this on to BG--hope it doesn't freak her out! :)
I see that some methods are kind of unsafe--Rocky's a small dog and I'd be afraid of some of the things they recommend as being too much for his little innards to handle. Not to mention that anything even slightly like food hitting the ground is his as far as he's concerned. She'll have to watch him like a hawk--or the obsessed dog mom she is. :)

10/19/13 12:23 pm (UTC)you don't know me from a hole in the wall, but I just had to jump in since I know what you mean about all those things!
I have a WIP that I'm really trying to hold off posting until it's completed, because I *hate* when I read WIPs that never get finished. And I know I only really write on the weekends. I really want it finished.
And two, my nest is almost empty, due to odd circumstances including divorce and my job, i now only have the 13 yo and home and she is very, very busy. I do love hanging out with my kids. I built them, damnit, I made sure they could talk about all kinds of interesting things, and have great senses of humor, and know random movies quotes and song lyrics. I didn't put all this hard work in to have somebody else reap the rewards!
I don't know how old you are, but yeah, other peeps with grown kids can be boring. I live in Stepford Land (literally - an expat community full of ladies who lunch and then put out a newsletter about it and the day trips they take to shopping malls) So, I hear you.
as for the roaches, that sucks. I was an apartment manager in LA for 9 years. When you spray one apartment, they just go to the next and then come back. Everyone's given good advice. Vacuum a lot, get the egg cases. The love dampness, so check under sinks and around the pipes for drips. I didn't know about the salt! See, they are little insect demons.
Keep writing!

10/19/13 04:03 pm (UTC)WIPs are the devil. I always am sure I'm going to finish, I really want to, but then this odd inertia sets in and I end up telling myself the story without ever writing anything down. Finish that WIP!
I didn't put all this hard work in to have somebody else reap the rewards!
I know, right? It's so unfair because no one else gets how great my kids are. *sigh*
So, I'm like a bazillion years old and getting the senior discount without even having to ask for it which by the way that senior discount is in no way a consolation for getting old. What sucks worse is people get old and then they get boring. SO FUCKING BORING. It's all look at my grandkid, blah-blah-blah. Who cares!!
I didn't know about the salt! See, they are little insect demons.
My thoughts exactly!!

10/19/13 04:18 pm (UTC)But I'm mad at you because your Lodi stories made me cry and sad and horny at the same time now I have to write something happy and be alone in my bunk. And I don't even like boys!
This show/fandom makes me all confused.

10/19/13 05:31 pm (UTC)*grins* We are *all* confused in this fandom. Those Winchesters, what they do to us, the way they twist us up, tsk.

10/19/13 05:57 pm (UTC)We still do food-garbage in the freezer until we can take it out. DH has a "delicate" ::cough:: nose.
I was a mess when Son the Elder moved out. By the time Son the Younger did, we were actually pretty happy to see the back of him so we could explore couplehood again. But then they both started boomeranging on us, first one, then the other, then both at the same time, bringing breakup and job loss trauma with them. "I didn't take you to raise! Oh, wait."
StY is still at home. WE moved out. Heh.
Post the WIP, dearheart. We'll nag you to keep going, yes? (Plus, I wanna reeeeead it nownownow!)
(no subject)
10/19/13 08:02 pm (UTC)LOL! There's an option!
I figure there'll still be some boomeranging here. I just can't imagine that she's out for good. I know my kid and she's...rare. But in a totally good way that, okay, looks totally nuts to outsiders. :D
Exploring couplehood? Ah! Is this the part where we get to be naughty in rooms other than the bedroom again? I mean--*yes*, date-night, movies out, sure, sure.

10/21/13 03:07 am (UTC)Oooh, roaches. *full body shudder* Such a phobia of mine as well. I was about 12 when I found out my mom lied about the fact that they could fly! I couldn't sleep for 3 days. LOL I have two cats that make it their live goal to keep me pest free, bless their little tormenting hearts. Never found anything else that worked long term, sorry. I wish her luck though.

10/21/13 05:18 am (UTC)The poor child!! She's been on the phone with me every day, and I can hear in her voice what a hard time she's having. It's a really major phobia and my heart bleeds for her but what can I do? I feel like I've passed my messed up psyche on to her. *sigh* Her dad thinks I'm catering to her but he's like Superman, nothing bothers him. Thank god. ;)
