This season's BB has been a great one for SF lovers. Gaaaaaah—hate saying sci-fi!! Ack! It's hard for us come up in the 60s. It used to be a way to tell the posers from the trufans 'cause only posers said sci-fi. Dang, children—I'm old. And kinda crabby, and totally off topic….

Here are some recs of what I've read so far, in no particular order. Read! Enjoy! Whenever I can, I include a link to the work posted on LJ. If you do read the fic on LJ, please leave a comment there! I'll add stories as I read them. ;D

Fic title: Chasing Darkness
Author name: [livejournal.com profile] ashtraythief
Artist name: [livejournal.com profile] lightthesparks
Genre: rps, slash, space
Pairing: Jared/Jensen
Rating: NC-17
Word count: 85k

Warnings: Space AU, violence, minor character death, institutionalized prostitution, mind manipulations, mentions of war and child death, vague mentions of child abuse and suicide, intoxication, mentions of Jared/other, mentions of two minors having sex with each other

Summary: Discharged from the military after the war and unable to find a regular job, Jensen and Dani end up on JD’s mining planet Wora. It’s one of the most hostile environments in the Old Galaxy, but the pay is astronomical. The job sounds easy enough: protect the miners. While battling the demons of his past, Jensen meets Jared, a beautiful, sought after companion, who is isolated by his own secrets. Jared had come to Wora, dragged by Chad, with the need to make some serious money. It doesn’t take Jensen long to figure out Jared’s secret and he has to decide how much he’s willing to risk to protect him.

terrific world building and edge-of-the seat action! Fabulous, competent, smart as hell Chad, and the world's greatest soap opera. No, you have to read it to get it. And it's *amazing!*

Plus, ass-kicking art by lightthesparks

Fic title: Multitudinous Echoes
Author name: [livejournal.com profile] walking_tornado
Artist name: [livejournal.com profile] dollarformyname
Genre: RPS AU
Pairing: Jared/Jensen
Rating: PG-13
Word count: ~45k

Warnings: expulsion, sickness, suffocation, minor character deaths, atypical aging

Summary: Cargo ship captain Jensen Ackles' two week crap job transporting colonists off-planet should have opened the doors for lucrative government contracts. Farmer Jared Padalecki should have married and started a family. Jared and Jensen's destinies intersect when Jensen rips apart Jared's life, separating him from his fiancée and removing Jared's people from their land. To win Jared over, Jensen recklessly promises to find Jared's lost fiancée. Jensen, Kim, and Felicia struggle to keep the colonists alive, and Jensen tries to ignore his growing interest in Jared as they search for Adrianne.

What I really enjoyed about this story was Jensen as the captain, solid, dedicated captain forced to make decisions that were very difficult, but correct for the circumstances. There was to me a little flavor of Dean in Captain Jensen's back story, to me at least.

Plus, there's lovely art bydollarformyname

Title: Déjà Vu
Author: [livejournal.com profile] zara_zee
Artist: [livejournal.com profile] riverofwind
Genre: Sci-fi, action-thriller, romance, slash. Loosely based on the 1990 film Total Recall
Pairings: Jared/Jensen (main pairing), minor ‘Dean Winchester’/‘Carmen Porter’
Rating: NC-17
Word Count: ~47,000

Warnings: violence, minor character deaths, amnesia/identity issues, m/m sex (bottom Jared), homophobic slurs, references to climate change and associated global disasters, pseudo-science (with special apologies to neurophysiologists, astrophysicists and computer hackers)

Summary:
Dean Winchester has a pretty sweet life. He works in construction; he married his long-time girlfriend, Carmen, straight out of high school; and he’s almost paid off a basic apartment in the Middle District. He may never have left his home district, let alone his home planet, but he’s happy… more-or-less.

So why does he keep dreaming about the red wastelands of Mars? Why does he know more about the Martian Resistance than he has any right to? And who do the long, long legs and decidedly male butt that have him waking up achingly hard every morning belong to?

Maybe Dean just needs a holiday? He couldn’t afford a real one, of course, but maybe he could go to Déjà Vu and get the memories of a holiday implanted; get Mars out of his system.

Of course, that’s when the trouble really starts.

The story was great fun, an exciting, fast-paced rework of Total Recall which is a thousand times better than the movie!!

That's it for now, folks! Enjoy!

I LOOOOVED Multitudinous Echoes. I had the privilege of beta-reading it, and I could not WAIT for each part LOL!! It was wuch a great piece of space-world-building, and then also so emotionally deep.

Almost done with Deja vu now, and I have Chasing Darkness queued up on my tablet.

Yessss Space!!!!!!!

Side note, very interesting point about SF v "Scifi". I had never thought about that, but a lot of fandom words go through evolutions. Like I remember there was some debate about calling supernatural "SPN" or "SN".

Oh gosh, I tell you, you could almost come to blows, that's how strongly folks felt about it! Hard to imagine now! :)

Oh yea, there was definitely debate over SpN/SN. Sports Night was still an active fandom when SpN toddled on het scene. I was firmly in the "Supernatural should be SpN" camp because how dare these upstart pip-squeaks try and take our Sports Night away????

LOL! How many people even remember Sports Night? Damn, that was some seriously good fic though....
