It hasn't worked for me for a long time. I keep getting three Russian LJs as results, usually the same three. Yandex used to be the in-house search engine. Now the default is general on-LJ and generally online Google. I've googled "yandex" and used it to search LJ, but the results are laughable. I've just stopped using it and use Google instead--at least it sort of works, unless what you're looking for on LJ is flocked.
They keep improving things. They're not improving things.
I was wondering about that... so maybe it's like an updated pen pal service for lonely people in Siberia. I've been opening another tab and googling as well... I was wondering why LJ couldn't find a particular journal but google could. Hope they fix it soon.
I doubt it gets "fixed". I don't believe the owners think it's broken. Realistically, when the Russians bought LJ the owners repurposed it as a social media platform for Russia, like Facebook--evidently facebook isn't accessible there. The vast majority of lj users now are Russian, and if you check your homepage you'll see things like "top posts" and buying tokens to put your lj higher in weekly ratings. It is definitely a status social media platform--the poster who gets the most "votes" wins kind of thing. LJ's owners have very little interest or investment in keeping US, UK, Canadian, European, or AUS users, much less fandoms, happy. We're a tiny minority of their membership.
They've changed formats and presentation to accomodate the new purpose. I'm just grateful they haven't changed more about LJ itself and made it even less accessible and workable for fannish folk like me.
So... I'm fairly new and had no idea Russia owned it, ha! Hope I didn't offend anyone, yikes! I couldn't decide between LJ and Dreamwidth and opened both - I just use DW for real life and keep my one and only fandom separate. Oh well. Google will have to suffice... WBM is not too shabby either :)
It's so inconvenient--I used to use it a lot, to find entries and comments I'd lost. It's useless now. Unless you want to friend those 3 journals they show.
...as in "we couldn't find what you're looking for but here are 3 people in the Ukraine that you may be interested in befriending." Ironically it's always worked well for me until the last couple of weeks - I really thought I'd flipped some unknown switch somewhere so good to know I'm in good company. I won't let it drive me crazy any more... I can walk from here, ha!
