Ah, here's a bit more...thank you all for your lovely comments. And a big wave to my Niece and her friend, who are lurking out there! *wink* hi, guys!
A wee smidge of schmoop--
Lex breathed an enormous sigh of relief when he made it out of the maze of the airport to the street, and was truly grateful to get a cab without a major wait. He so wanted to get to Bruce’s, get out of the costume he had on and be himself again. He wanted a hot bath, a drink or several, and food, and he wasn’t feeling particular about the order in which he got them.
Forty-five minutes later, he stood on a street corner as the cab pulled away, hoped he wouldn’t have to stand there long. He was wrong about heaven being a hot tub and a stiff drink. It was *not* being in the back of a cab with crappy shocks and sprung seats .He laughed a little to himself, a laugh that turned into a barely smothered yelp when a hand grabbed his shoulder. “Bruce, dammit!” He snarled and scowled up into a handsome and solemn face.
“ Lex.” He sounded serious, but Lex knew intimately Bruce’s every expression, tone of voice, and Lex was fully aware when he was being laughed at. Before he could get too annoyed, he was swept into a big, warm hug, and Bruce whispered in his ear “Missed you.” Lex was suddenly aware of how tense and on edge he’d been for the last few days; it was almost like coming home after a long rough trip.
“ Come on,” Bruce said, and grabbed the backpack. “ Let’s get in the car.” He crawled in after Bruce, the back seat of the limo like a bed compared to the way he’d traveled there. In seconds he was drifting towards sleep, just dimly aware of Bruce stroking a finger down his cheek. ‘ He shouldn’t do that,’ Lex thought fuzzily. ‘‘Have to tell him’
*Clark! It’s cold…too cold Clark! Come back! Why are you leaving me here? Come back, take me home… I can’t Lex, you’re dreaming… What? * Lex jerked awake, confused for a moment, his eyes rolling up to catch a look of fond amusement on Bruce’s face. At the same instant he realized he still had on the silly knit cap, only it had migrated slightly over one eye.
“ I swear to God, one word, and I’ll strangle you!” He snatched the cap off his head and flung it on the limo floor. There was only so much a man could take before snapping, and Lex felt he’d truly reached that point.
“ I wasn’t going to say…anything,” Bruce replied. “ Really.” he said to Lex’s skeptical look. He covered his mouth as he coughed, and Lex decided to pretend it was indeed a cough and not a barely smothered chuckle. Bruce pointed out the window, “ we’re here.”
The limo stopped in front of a simple brownstone, neat and well maintained. Lex looked at Bruce in surprise. “ Not the manor?”
“ I thought you might like more privacy than the manor can afford. This is one of several places I have around the city,” Bruce turned to look at Lex. “ They’re not exactly “safe houses,” but they are very…low key.”
“ Thanks, Bruce. I’m just trying to keep Dad out of my business for a bit. It’s more about down time than secret espionage-y type of stuff.” He grinned at Bruce, but he just looked back at Lex, and raised an eyebrow.
“Of course. Come on, I know you’re exhausted. Let me get you comfortable.”
*Thank God, I’ve got a Bruce. Pity everyone doesn’t…* He let Bruce grab the backpack again and followed him up the stairs.
“ It’s just us. Alfred’s home, taking care of some…personal business for me.”
“ Fine. Very mysterious. And you know you’re going to tell me exactly what you mean before I return home, hmm?” Lex looked about and gestured at his bag. “ Where can I unpack? I’d love to clean up a bit.”
“ That depends. There are guest rooms, or…?”
“ Ah. A guestroom would be fine, thanks. And I desperately hope there’s time for a bath?” Lex kept his head down while he replied to Bruce. He didn’t want to see his face, or answer any questions at the moment and he used the excuse of the bag to avoid dealing with any issues just yet. Bruce was no fool. He turned and walked down a short hallway, and indicated a room to Lex. “My room is on the second floor. I’ll check on you after you’ve had a chance to refresh your self?”
“That’d be great. Listen, Bruce, thanks for…everything. I owe you so much, I couldn’t ever repay you in one lifetime.” Bruce looked at Lex a little blankly for a moment and then a whisper of a smile flowed over his face. “Yes.” He said and left Lex in the room.
