We Canadians are very proud of Hugh and Flashpoint because it is a Canadian-made show, airing on a US network in primetime - this hasn't happened since Due South!

There's a dark history?

All I know about him is from some smoking hot hot HCL fic, and pics. I've never seen him in the flick, or anything else. Boy, moving he's like wow....

Yeah, Hugh is amazing to behold. He's got charisma that's off the charts, so palpable you can FEEL when he walks into a room without looking. He's a gifted wordsmith, much like the way Jim Morrison was; there's a lot of depth to the lyrics he writes.

Brief bio: Hugh hails from Kingston, Ontario. When he was 15, to avoid getting beat up all the time, he got into drugs. He reasoned that the kids would think he was cool and leave him alone. Well, he found out the hard way that he had a penchant for addiction and what started with pot eventually led to heroin. He is, today, a recovering heroin addict. He went through rehab many times, even died twice (clinically) and had to be revived.

For a long time, he was lead singer of a kick-ass rock group called the Headstones. (The lead guitarist, Trent, is one of our good friends.) It didn't make it easy on Hugh's struggle to keep off the horse when he was touring with three guys who would smoke pot and drink copious amounts of booze -- which THEY could control.

It was during the band's heyday that Hugh's friend and director Bruce MacDonald tapped him to play the lead in an adaptation of the novel "Hard Core Logo." This is when Hugh met Callum Rennie (RayK from "Due South"). They clicked instantly (Hugh has said numerous times how much he loves Callum, and included him in the credits on every Headstones album). On the down side, they both share an addiction problem (Callum's a recovering alcoholic), and sometimes they'd indulge together. But apparently they've worked it out because they're both healthy now and working hard. They're also still very tight friends, Callum helping Hugh to delve more into his acting career.

But I'm getting ahead of myself. A few years ago, Hugh's sister (who would always pick up the pieces whenever Hugh wound up wasted and in trouble), and his then-fiance/now-wife Midori, got fed up with his destructive behavior and issued an ultimatum: he got clean and stayed clean, or he'd never see them again.

Of course, this was one of the things that led to the breakup of the band, sadly, because that lifestyle was too toxic. Hugh went into rehab again. After a year or so, he got clean. He has since formed a new band (because music is in his DNA -- he can't NOT sing!), and he's appeared in many Canadian-made movies and starred in a mini-series.

Now he's the star of "Flashpoint," which is being seen here in the States -- and this is allowing the rest of the world (so to speak) to see what Canadians (and some of us Yanks *G*) have known for some time: he can ACT. Yes, he was awesome in HCL -- but then, he was really just being himself in that film (his rock star persona).

I cannot begin to tell you how proud I am of Hugh, and how happy, that he has made it this far. I look at him on this new series and marvel at how good he looks -- how HEALTHY -- because I remember a time when he was bloated, pasty, red-eyed and rolling on a stage mumbling the lyrics to his own songs because he was too fucked up/high. I used to fear for him, worried about him, because he was so self-destructive. Punishing himself for whatever he thought he did wrong. Hurting people who tried to help him.

It would seem he's finally moved past that. And now he's talking about getting back together with the guys and the Headstones playing again. If it happens...I will be there, baby. With bells. ;) I can't wait to congratulate him personally for what he has achieved. I know how hard he worked to get to this point. Getting an illness like that under control is NOT easy, not by a long shot. What he's done is incredible, and I couldn't be more pleased.
