Hi! I'm trying to work my way through this CW rps thing that I blame on you guys--it's all your faults! I'm an innocent here.

Hope it works. I'm not all that good at the RPSing, even though it is fun. It's just, there's so little to hang it on, and for some reason, I reeeeelly hate watching interviews, they make me squirm. I did like that one a few years back with the whole SV cast. It was funny, informative and scripted to the most part. More like unreal life, the way I like it.

So, those of you who've written RPS seriously, how do you research for it? How do you decide what your characters are like? I'm deeply into reading the J2, in case you haven't noticed my near incessant mentioning of it, and some of them are quiet lovely, and some of them are Norman and Alfonso, but for the purposes of the story, the writer called them Jensen and Jared. Also...stop fucking Thomas up. I swear to God, don't make me come over there.


Anyhoo--being here doesn't mean I've fixed my SpN story so much as given up on it. What comes is what comes. I'm not going to sweat it. Not like I'm being tested on it, after all.

I've written exactly one J2 fic, and i didn't do 'research' at all, since it was pretty wildly AU, heh.

But, i guess, watch some vids of them and such and see what sort of person they're like. I mean - we only ever get the 'surface' person, anyway, so all the rest - Jared likes red sheets, Jensen is grumpy before coffee - is all made up, anyway.

If you think you have a sense of the person from interviews and behind-the-scenes and things, go for it. Otherwise, no worries, it's fake!!

LOL From what I can make out, most of the RPS in SPN fandom is basically just writing fic with original characters, buy just putting the Jensen and Jared names in there for your audience. Honestly I don't get that into the fic when it's just a story of Jensen and Jared on set getting together or something like that, it's when it's totally AU that I enjoy it more, so really half the time I don't get why the names Jensen and Jared are being used. Especially when it's evil Jared the drug dealer, or Jensen the abused porn star and has no relevance whatsoever to the CW actor.

I still love that type of RPS though *looks shifty*, but I do find myself reading it more as original character type stuff, rather than it being an actual J2 ship.

It is! It is--there's no way some of those characterizations make any sense! I guess I overthink stuff. I mean, SV you knew who those guys were. You never had Mike stuffing Tom into an iron maiden and not letting him out until he called Mike Daddy and begged his permission to suck him off in a public place. I mean--really!

I know! Dean comes across as all horny and dirty when you first see the character, but his sex scenes are then all soft focus and girly. Titanic rip-off for gods sake!

I don't write (RPS or otherwise) but I want to throw my two cents in about the subject. If you're story is mostly J2 please don't have Tom be mean/evil or dumb. Almost every J2-centric fic that I've read casts him either as a villain or as a total lunk head. And I don't think either one is correct or fair. And I would think the same thing even if I wasn't a total Tom girl.

It drives me nuts when I start reading a fic and Thomas is an evil drug dealing sadistic abusive bastard who hurts widdle Jared or whatever--where in the world do they come up with that characterization????? Me, I'm thinking if you want an evil asshole in your fic, make him up! Stop abusing my Thomas!

I think it's just on my mind because I was reading a J2 fic that just FABULOUS yesterday but then I got to a part with Tom and he was basically written as "dumb but pretty". And it killed the rest of the fic for me.

I guess I should just be glad he wasn't abusive to anyone in it.

Right? I guess that's what I was wondering when I asked about research for RPS--all you have to do is look at an interview or two and see that Thomas is far from stupid--in the early years he was painfully earnest about his craft. Just looking at his jailbait pics from back in the day might make you think he was dumb and pretty, though. I guess pretty guys have to go through the same shit pretty girls do. :)

And just about all the people that write Tom as mean/dumb are folks that have never had anything to do with the SV fandom as near as I can tell. So it must be them just picking a guy on a CW show at random and sticking them in the part.

You should hatch a bunny that's like a Good Will Hunting AU. Everyone thinks Tom is all dumb but he's secretly really smart. I can see Michael as Chuckie.

I'm having the same problem with my new pet project. I have a J2 idea that I want to write, but where do I find the research. Yeah there's the con stuff and interviews, but it's not the same as sitting down with the DVDs of SpN and writing Sam or Dean. I just honestly don't know where to start to make the characters believable.

My!Sam and Dean are pouting over no updates on the SpN fic. They like your!Sam and Dean and wanted to read more about them. (Meaning they wanted me to be distracted so I'd quit telling them to get to work! LOL)

It's hard I think because we all have our own ideas of how these guys might behave! I guess all there is to do is just stretch what we know to the limit and like the fabulous tabqui says, it's fake! Make it up as we go!

I like stories that seem plausible - that's the naughty thrill of RPS for me. So I generally don't read AU's (except for stories like "You Keep me High" or the cute M/T future-fic that Lexalicious and Herohunter just wrote.)

I'm also amused by how Michael & Tom are characterized in J2 fic: comic relief couple or mustache twirling villains!
