"A little bit ago"

Is that a weird phrase? Do you know other people who say that?

I hear it frequently in the south.

Thanks! There's a discussion going on at the Rose manse about that phrase. I'm the only one who uses it, and everyone swears I made it up!

Southern, hunh? Odd that, me being a Jersey girl and all.

It's the interwebs. They are insidious and they burrow into your brain. (I bet some southerner on your friends list used it and it got stuck in your head.)

You probably heard a character Christian Kane was playing say that. He always plays a Texas, an Oklahoman, or some unspecified southerner. It's all over TV and movies, for sure, but not just from him.

We southerners have many quaint phrases and that's definitely one of them.

How odd that I use this phrase! I've never lived down south, and my mom was European, so I didn't pick it up from the old folks. Everyone in the Fam swore I made it up! I must have heard it at some point some where, and liked it. :)

I don't think I say it, maybe I do, I dunno, but I've heard people use it and it doesn't sound weird to me.

*raises hand* lol

I use it quite a bit. But then, we western-PA people have some very odd words/phrases from what I understand. lol

Yes, indeed. We hear such all the time, down here in Texas.

For example:

#1 "When did you hear that? She'd have told me first!"

# 2 "Calm down; she just found out she was pregnant a little bit ago."

A little bit ago = a little while ago.

We also say, "A long while ago," in Texas, and I know that is common all over.

For example: "Oh dear, I met him, a long while ago, too far to count." Very common expression in my world, matching "a long while ago" and "too far to count."

Too far to count--that's cool, I've never heard that before!

I don't even know why he suddenly seemed to think it was odd I say a little bit ago, I've been saying it forever. But when he mentioned it, I did notice that I was alone using it. I think you're right though, I heard it from someone on TV or maybe read it and it just felt comfortable to use. :)

I'm sure I've both heard and said 'a little bit ago.'

When you stop to really think about it, it does sound slightly odd, but that's true of a lot of phrases.

Now that he's brought it to my attention, it does sound odd! When he first pointed it out, I thought he was weird, until everyone else agreed with him, traitorous lot! Now it's my turn to say nyah-nyah...or I would, if I wasn't real mature and above that sort of thing.
