How much do I love this writer for posting multiple formats of the single file?? OMG, that's so rare, and so valuable! A fic this long deserves to be savored while lying in bed and commuting to work, over several days, and usually I have to download a zillion parts on LJ.

I told the author how grateful I was. Now I'm going to start reading! Thank you!

I know I keep flailing over stories but this is a story that's going to be hard to top. I imagine it must be being recced all over SpN fandom. It should be!

I offically name you evil. I just got finished reading the last SpN you recommended and now here's another one five times as long. Darn you, all of you recs are sooo good. There isn't one I haven't liked yet and the premise of this story sounds right up my alley. I love alternate worlds and otherworldly things.

Oh, do I have to know the episode to understand the story? I've only watched the first six episodes of season one so far.

So, on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being cute puppies and kittens frolicking in cotton candy, and 10 being the average epic that you write, precisely how angsty is this story? Because it sounded intriguing, but if it's 175,000 words of hurt to 3000 words of comfort, I'm not really sure I'm up to that (which is why I didn't end up reading it this weekend, even though that had been my plan).

Damn these huge but fantastically addictive recs!!I just know I will end up with massive sleep deprivation if I start this (as you are the second person to rec it for me and it's been open in my tabs for two days now) so I am going to wait till I have finished two books (The Bride Stripped Bare, Nick and Norah's Inifinite Playlist) and two current fics of much smaller size currently open. In the meantime - I don't usually bother with G fic but have you read: debbiel66's Off The Map??? Post S4 Sam and Dean and it was really very good. You'll love it. http://debbiel66.livejournal.com/8795.html#cutid1

I'm so glad you like my recs! I love spreading the good stuff around! ;)

I'm giving you the link to a description of the ep--some background lets you understand how the boys came to be where they are, how this particular thing works. If I explain it to you, I'll end up spoiling you. This way, you have the necessary info before you go in!

No, no--this isn't angst like mine! It's...real. It's heart-breaking in spots, but uplifting too. It's not the kind of thing that leaves you gasping in a broken little puddle either, or tortured by unrelenting horrible incident after incident. There are moments that make you want to cry, sure, but overall, it's positive, I think.
(you *are* asking me though and you know I have some kinda screw loose...but!)

I'd rate it a 5 on the ouch-o-meter. Girl, this is writing that will make you feel lucky to have read thisd story, trust me.

Thanks for the background link. It helped. Just to let you know - I spent the day reading this. It was an excellent story and thought the author did an incredible job with all the psychology stuff. It was also nice to read a story of a ward in which everyone wasn't a power hungry psychopath.

Yes, it was much quieter than the usual institution fic, what drove it was more issues of neglect rather than the joint being packed with sadistic abusers. It had a more realistic feel to it, though of course some aspects were simplified and others a bit exaggerated but it didn't take the enjoyment of the fic away. I don't often read mental institution stories--RL kind of lessened my fondness for those kind of stories--but this one just sounded so different, and went so far beyond just an institution fic, plus I didn't feel like the writer took a cheap shot anywhere.

I'm glad you liked it, too. The episode it's based on is an excellent one, as well. It's got that SpN thing going on--funny, but really, not funny at all. I love how they do that... *G*
