My brilliant friends--what would teen Caucasian boys have been listening to in the late 90s-early 2000s? They probably weren't listening to the same stuff I was--by the way, Big Pun the greatest rapper ever was, no argument. I ask about music because I need it for my story, where I will pretend to know what teen boys back in the day were thinking about. Wish me luck! If I come up with a decent outline in the next two days I'm signing up for the SpN BB. (waits for the cheering-*cricket, cricket*)

Well, my knowledge comes from my brothers. Colin listened to stuff like the Smashing Pumpkins, Björk, The Cardigans, Radiohead, uh, The Prodigy, Manson, Sneaker Pimps, Garbage, PJ Harvey, Nine Inch Nails, and Filter. Jeremy, on the other hand, loved the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden and then Audioslave, Godsmack, Stereophonics, Belle and Sebastian, Lenny Kravitz, REM, Queens of the Stone Age, and Sheryl Crow. Keep in mind, though, that both Nirvana and Hole were still quite popular, even considered old school by like 1999.

Well, suffice it to say that my brother Jeremy's taste runs more towards mainstream acts, while Colin in high school was the weird cross-dressing goth kid, so his favorites are always, uh, correspondingly weird.

If that helps. :)

Yeah, I thought I'd use the music to kind of type the characters. Not that it's going to be a huge part of the fic, but I thought I'd toss in some music kind of like the movie did...maybe. *G* Or maybe use it as a soundtrack to write to.

I'd say also it depends on where you set the fic. I'd say the second set from above are more mainstream but still a bit alternative for the center of the US white bread types. :)

That's something I hadn't thought of. I was going to fudge and set it where I know--a kind of nondescript New Jersey. *koff* like always.... I know they're Texas boys but I know next to nothing about Texas and am much too lazy to research. Is that wrong? I mean, Stevie King sets all his stories in the same county practically and he's getting paid....

I think my attitude sucks.

I think you can set it anywhere you like. That's why you are God the author. :)

Also what genre do they listen to? I take my music seriously in fics, becasue I think for teen characters it's strong identifier and says a lot about their personality. I listened to my parents swing music and my uncles 50's collection, but wouldn't touch country with a ten foot pole and rarely missed a weekend of Casey Kasem. :) A goth kid is going to have different tastes than the kid from the farm most likely. The Christian boy likes rock, but only listens to Christian Rock. :) Or you can use the music as a way to set the person apart. The goth kid who also likes jazz or is the fic set near a college radio station which would open up a much wider listening opportunity. :)

I'll shut up now. :(

Heee!

I listened to my parents swing music and my uncles 50's collection, but wouldn't touch country with a ten foot pole and rarely missed a weekend of Casey Kasem.

Ditto, substituting Casey with Don Cornelius. ;)

I thought that I'd use to music to give hints to each kid's personality, not that the music will be a huge presence, more of a little background flavor. It's funny, I had elaborate playlists to write to, but only really used music in a fic once--which was a lot of fun but very labor intensive, hah!

Anyhoo, I have to listen to this music Red suggested, but I know that one kid listens to pop, the other to a little rap and one to music that would have been a little adventurous, considering their ages (13-15 at the moment and subject to change depending how my slash muse moves. lately she's been kind of hands off. *g*).

No shutting up girl--it's fun to talk about writing!!

There were a lot of popular bands at the time, but if you're looking for you run-of-the-mill, normal white teenage boy who doesn't think he's black, you're probably looking at stuff like Staind, Creed, The Verve Pipe, Matchbox 20, Dave Matthews Band, Third Eye Blind, Eve 6, Blink 182, (basically the soundtrack to Can't Hardly Wait) Stone Temple Pilots and Jane's Addiction were still really popular, Godsmack, Disturbed had just come out around that time. The Foo Fighters. Tool and A Perfect Circle or Placebo, if you're looking on the darker side of things. The Gorillaz came out around then, for the funkier side of things. Maybe Sublime and the rest of the Ska-like movement.

Your friend Red listed some bands that were really more popular in the early to mid nineties, but Colin and Jeremy have some good taste. Especially Queens of the Stone Age (my favorite band!) But I don't think their break-away hit album came out until 2002. Audioslave also came out in 2002, if I'm thinking correctly. Radiohead is one of those better bands that kind of ruled that era of music. Red Hot Chili Peppers and Incubus too. And let's not forget Korn, who were super popular with teenage boys at that time. One of Pearl Jam's more popular albums was released in 1999.

I'm a huge, crazy music fan with a ridiculously large collection, so if you have any questions, let me know. That was right around the time I started becoming really musically aware too.

Fabulous! I'll check with you as I go along--the story takes place in one summer in 2000, so there's not a lot of wiggle room I guess. And judging from the responses I've got a pretty good idea of which groups to use and I'll have to Youtube them all--the only one really familiar to me is The Gorillaz and just that one song.

I have weird musical taste. :)

Depends on the boys and what "scene" they were in. Slipknot, NiN, Korn, Green Day, Deftones, Rage Against the Machine, Eminem, Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bush, The White Stripes, the Strokes, System of a Down, KMFDM, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, The Offspring, Blink 182, Sum 41, Godsmack, Rammstein, Mudvayne, Tool, Third Eye Blind, Queens of the Stone Age, Stone Temple Pilots.

Odd story I remember asking my friend what he was listening to on his tape player in 6th form. He said 'Ozzy Osborne', to which I replied 'yeah my mum liked the Osbornes' and walked away. Later I realised mum actually liked the Osmonds.... Fortunately he was a nice boy and didn't say anything.

Pretty much like the time I told eveyone I liked Melvin Gaye and couldn't understand why they were all laughing at me.
