Well, it wasn't what I'd thought, but it also wasn't wholly awful. I was thinking Paranormal Activity and Blair Witch, and instead we got the CW's version of Chronicle, a film I really liked. And there's a long history of Show and now-defunct Show ripping off movies, but this--I'm ambivalent. I like the outsider perspective on SamandDean (and, boy, did they call that one with the "office romance" and the Rizzoli and Isles lines), and I really liked the backwards format, where the end of what we see is just the beginning of another case for the guys (and having the credits at the end was also neat).

And I for one wasn't shocked about Dean's decision at the end. It makes sense with his history. When the girl said she wanted to be a do-gooder lawyer I immediately guessed she'd turn "bad" in an echo of Sam. And Dean turning the music back on as he and Sam left the apartment really cemented that angle for me, that Dean was giving this girl the same benefit of the doubt as he'd given Sam, as he would have wanted some other hunter to give Sam--if things had played out differently all those years at Stanford.

But, that's just my take. I could be wrong.

Also, forgot to mention that the episode gets major points from me for Dean referencing Friday Night Lights. :)

Right? I love that after 8 years they can still come up with interesting, different shows!

Wow, this one is divisive! I thought the "kids" were horribly written "you don't know what it means to be in love", "I don't want to be Piggy!" - dear god - & the guest acting pretty dire.

Did you pick up on a Dean/Sam parallel I missed? I was so bored midway through I admittedly may not have been paying full attention!

Oh now see, I thought that it was purposefully a bit overwrought--young love and all. :)

No, what happened at the end was Dean's complete reversal to everything he's ever said before--he let the werewolf walk! I'm still not sure whether to believe him or not. I'll have to rewatch to catch everything and I was so shocked by what he said I totally lost Sam and what his reaction was to that.

What the hell happened in Purgatory!??!

(i clex you back! *GGG*)

Baby Clex!

Oh, that's right - this time last year he was killing Sam's old girlfriend! Is this a sign he succumbed to Benny's charms in purgatory & is now more willing to give monsters the benefit of the doubt?

*still wishes all three shrieky kids had died in the first 30 seconds & show was about the hottie wolf professor gettin' Alpha with Dean or Sam*

Oooooo--kaaaay, not sayin ' THAT wouldn't have been a way better show than...any of them, just about, lol!!!

I'm thinking Benny's lays the pipe real good...

ACH! *smacks self* Look how you've got my mind in the gutter!!! Dean would never do such a thing!! because Sam would kill him Never! of course, what happens in Purgatory stays in Purgatory, no doubt

I'm guessing you don't spend much time on Tumblr?
*snerk*

That level of hyper-self-conscious dramatics is pretty par for the course in kids that age, especially when they're 'in love' and feel that they're somehow 'the other'.

I think tumblr collectively could have come up with much more convincing dialogue for teens! It rang very inauthentic to me, like 40-something writers desperately trying to sound hip. Not just cheese, but recycled cheese.

The only parts I liked were the professor deciding to attack the kid who kept falling asleep in his class and the students' observations on Sam & Dean. Would have preferred if the writer had ditched 2 of the kids and had one kid making a documentary on his/her idolized professor, who turns out to be an Alpha, filming Sam & Dean along the way. And we should have seen the awkward conversation where the guys discuss their year apart - would have been a great final scene.

That said, I'm glad people did like this ep because I was worried SPN would lose the ratings momentum from Arrow if everyone tuned out midway through!

I was shocked!! I hope it's true because that makes such a huge step away from where Dean's almost always been and amps the mystery up that much more! :)

I didn't see Dean's letting the girl go to be that out of character. Yes, I think he was changed by Purgatory, but when he killed Sam's friend it was because she was killing humans. He let the son go after he asked him if he had killed humans. He also learned to live with letting the non human eating vamps live. So adding that philosophy to becoming friends with Benny and I can see where he is at. I did like Sam's reaction. He was thrown off, but I think it made him somewhat hopeful. Overall, I liked the episode. (Just wandered across your page, hope you don't mind my commenting here.)

I also think he has a hard time killing kids no matter what they are.

What happened in Purgatory has to have had an influence on Dean's decision, I think. You also pointed out the vegan vamps, and I'd forgotten about them and that leads my brain into all kinds of places...hmm. I kind of missed Sam's reaction to Dean letting go of the werewolf, but before that he seemed to be incredibly conciliatory...mystery!

I certainly don't mind folks visiting, not at all! Thanks for your interesting comment! :)

Yes! I enjoyed it so. I loved the outsider POV gradually realizing that Sam'n'Dean are *not* FBI, that something totally strange is going on, that they're a big part of it.....

Just really excellent. :) And his decision at the end, his little 'hrmmms', and staring around at the wrecked, bloody room..... Yeah. This will totally figure in some future part of the season arc.

:)

I was kind of the opposite; I went into the episode thinking,"this looks fun (for certain definitions of the word fun) and different," but by halfway through I was pretty over it. Partially because the sheer number of cameras they apparently had lying around recording all the time seemed implausible, but mostly because I didn't particularly find any of the kids that interesting. I didn't *dislike* them per se... I just didn't like them either. Oh and the Wincest jokes are starting to annoy me. I liked it at first, but it's starting to feel a bit pandering-y, but then I emphatically *don't* ship them (incest squicks me out majorly) so that may be coloring my opinion.

Still it was an interesting and somewhat unique idea and I did like the end scene quite a bit, so overall not a horrible episode.

Show's always done the wincest jokes, I think before they knew what wincest was! And if it's squicky for you, than I can imagine it must be gross and annoying to have every other show reference it. But...it's kind of tradition.

Granted, the amount and kind of footage they were able to take was implausible, but I went with it because that's how easy I am I roll. :)

See, I do like the Wincest jokes, as long as they're used sparingly and it really makes sense in context that someone might come to that conclusion. Because seriously, who expects two brothers to go to a Bed & Breakfast together?
