Bear

Bare

Don't use bare when you mean bear! As in "Dean could not bear the guilt. Any guilt. All the guilt. Guilt over all the things." He does not bare the weight of all that guilt.

I mean it. Stop doing that.

GASP!!!! What are you saying? Why, that's a perfect example of how to use 'bear' and my, such tragically heartbreaking words--why a work of perfect genius, I'd say. If only I knew who wrote this incredibly stirring prose. I'd shake their pudgy little paw. I mean, their incredibly gifted hand.

Well, it's not *only* spell check. If you type "definitely," spell check will let it go, because it's a word (and even, usually, the right word). Where spell check gets you into trouble is when you type "definatly." The first word that comes up when you right-click the red squiggles is "defiantly," and if you have auto-correct on, that's what you get. But if you spelled it right in the first place, it wouldn't come up. :)

My peeve is people who are obviously trying to approximate things they've heard out loud but never seen written. A classic example, dating back to the fanzines of the '60s and '70s, or so I'm told, is "torcher." (As in, "The Klingons decided to torcher Captain Kirk.") The one that's especially bugging me right now, though, is "one in the same." Seriously, people? If you're going to write something, read something!

omg, I read "torcher" all puzzled like, trying to remember when the Klingons set Kirk on fire and then howled with laughter!

One in the same!! You're right, it's all over the damn place lately and driving me *crazy*! It doesn't even make the slightest bit of sense!

I agree so hard--read, people, damn it! Pick up a book and learn something!

I love you, Roxy! You're letting me use my Grammar Police icon again! *glomps on you*

Yeah, the bear/bare thing irritates me, as does the definitely/defiantly mistake. Added grrrrrs to the one in the same/one and the same. What else? How about when people say/write "You've got another THING coming" when it's supposed to be "You've got another THINK coming." I don't care that it's THING in whatever rock song - they had it wrong.

I still say one of my biggest gripes is when people write/say THAT when it should be WHO. Even people whom one would think should know better do it. :-(

Yes, yes!! (and happy to serve! :D )

I still say one of my biggest gripes is when people write/say THAT when it should be WHO.

I'm sure I was guilty of that starting out, but any handy-dandy grammar quick check will tell you that's a no-no. Now when I read it, it feels so uncomfortable, like a shirt two sizes too small.

Whenever I see people make mistakes like that when I'm reading fic, my mind instantly makes the correction as I read. It doesn't prevent the irritation, though. I think too many people either don't know the right way to write/say it, or they're too lazy to make sure. I guess it's understandable in fanfic but when you see professionals doing it, that's WRONG.

Not to spark an argument, but from what I can tell the think/thing disagreement seems to be one of the great debates for the ages. Think makes more sense in the context of 'another' (what was the first thing?) and thing makes more sense from a grammar perspective (unless your name is Dr. Suess, 'think' is not a noun). They also have slightly different connotations, think implies that if the listener believes x then they will soon find themselves revaluating that opinion, whereas thing is more threatening, saying the listener will suffer some vague negative consequence if they continue to believe x.

I gotta go with the first commenter here...

They're both bare. In fact, I stared at this rant for a minute, knowing that I agreed with it, but not able to fathom your use of pictures for the life of me.

It didn't help that, at first, I couldn't work out why you were suggesting that Atlas was a bear (as in grizzly...)

I need alcohol.

No see, they are similar but VERY different. Atlas is bearing the world on his shoulders and Beard is just bare, meaning he bears nothing. See? Mostly I couldn't find a good picture of Atlas clothed. *shrugs*

And Atlas does look a bit like a Bear there, doesn't he? All muscular and hairy, yummmm....

I'm sorry, I'm just laughing myself silly here. :D

Oh, I got it eventually. It just took a while of slow, loud gear-grinding. Then I was like, "why didn't she pick a clothed man holding something heavy...?"

Then I said to myself, "hey, self, why the hell are you complaining about there being MORE naked men?"

I didn't admit this in the first comment, but after 'bear' of the grizzly variety, my next thought was 'bear' of the hairy gay man variety. Finally, my brain supplied the actual use of 'bear' that you were referring to.

Mmm bear. Mmm bare.

My mom used to say you have another think coming and I always thought it was just supposed to be amusing. Like, "I yam what I yam and that's all I yam." Which makes little sense here but it's funny. And it's true.

The way you explain it, it makes more sense to me, but I still lean towards "think" being the more correct choice, more often than not. You're right in that this will probably stay one of the mysteries of the ages! LOL!

I wasn't impressed with some of the things they handled in this episode. I mean Zeke is obviously shady, but why make Dean make that decision? And the way they handled Cas' first time I mean like really.

Why did you get me watching this series Roxster?
