Okay. Hmmm. I'm in, I'm just wondering where you're taking me. Because it looks like we've been here before, but we really haven't. I think this is the first time that we've had this said aloud. Hunh! Very interesting. When you guys watch it, let me know what you think!

Damn thing totally Jossed me but I guess that at least means Adam Glass and I are on the same page philosophically. His writing history with SPN isn't too shabby.

He seems to write pretty good shows, true. He gets them better than some, and as far as I'm concerned, *WAY* better than Carver does.

I think the problem with Carver is that he's not interested in a real examination of the issues, only in manufacturing drama.

I totally agree. He came back to the show in a heavy-handed way, like, "I'm in charge and now it's going to be *good.*" and it *so* totally wasn't. The first thing he does is make Sam an unsympathetic character, and then, never explains why. And as much as folks deny Jared has any acting chops, it was only his performance that kept the character from sucking completely.

*fans self* Pardon me, I'm feeling a ton of ways about this. :)

The sad thing is that could have been a good story if he hadn't gone the cliche romance route. When Sam said "it wasn't about her" and Dean came out with that summation "I went to purgatory and Sam hit a dog" I thought that was going to be the story. And it could have been great. It could have been revealed that Sam hit that dog when he was blind with tears and then he found himself stuck with this helpless creature who needed him to survive. Then, for the first time in his life, he's the caregiver and we could have been shown how the dog became a stand in for the brother he was mourning, couldn't find and couldn't save. Maybe that was going to be the story and Carver bottled out. Remember that scene where we saw Sam shopping then cooking and feeding Dean? That could have changed the whole dynamic in the relationship and led to new and original stories instead of rehashing the same old tropes every season. Ah well. Missed opportunities :(

*CLINGS TO YOU SOBBING AND SNOTTING*

THAT!!!! THAT'S THE STORY I WANTED!

I didn't even know it until right now! But man, what a hell of a great story that would have been! Amelia could have been there too. Dean should have met her, and been puzzled and jealous, just like Sam was about Bennie. But they didn't let Dean meet her, he just acted like an ass and that sucked. I wanted to see Sam REALLY make a choice, to feel like he was torn between the two of them, not just choosing Dean out of inertia and a mild sense of duty.

Exactly. And that feeling of inertia has persisted. They only seem to be carrying on out of habit.

I would, but I have this huge ongoing serial that I'm committed to and that absorbs all my free time. May I offer you a peek at that instead? Some others who are finding the show hard going at the moment are finding it a comforting alternative. It's an AU retelling of the epic romance that's been described as a Supernatural reboot. Sam and Dean are recognizably the same two people from the original show, except as they would be if Sam had been brought up by hard line hunters while Dean had an ordinary life, and they don't meet until they're the ages they were at the start of Season One. Here's the master post, if you think you might like to give it a try:
