Do people who write Christian Kane in all those J2 stories even know who the hell he is? They screw him up almost as much as they screw up Michael and Tom. Very annoying.

I've never written Christian Kane - if I ever did, I'd send him to the barber shop to get rid of all that hair so we can enjoy his pretty bone structure again.

Nah, he's almost always the good friend who protects/saves Jensen. Because they're the bestest friends ever. *pit-tuiiiii*!

I'm using a CK variant in my current long J2 AU. Mr Christopher Caine is neither the wingman nor the rival, but a sporting buddy to my Jensen character. He's a great horseman, a cocky fighter, and a bit of a warm sentimentalist under a bluff exterior. He serves two main narrative functions: he's the voice of straightdom by which my Jensen character gets a better idea of his own different-ness, and he gives my Jensen character someone to exposition interact with besides my Jared character.

Now that Chris is practically a close personal friend of the family, I'm inclined to fic him only with great respect.

Ah, that I get completely, and it makes sense. Sometimes he's just....*in* a story, doing nothing but being drunk and cursing and all Texas, or Okalahoma, whatever.

If I'm going to write "classic" RPS, where the known trufax are arrayed to produce slash and squee, I can't see throwing in every person the principals are acquainted with just for the hell of it.

You know what? I get annoyed at all the 'Chris' out there. His name's *Christian*, and when i see him on set goofing around with his Leverage buddies or whoever, it's always 'Christian'.

It's so pretty - use his full name!!
*and i luff him, and he's apparently a bit crazy, but i just don't get the whole 'best buddies with Jensen' thing. I mean...do they actually ever hang out all that much? It's very confusing.*

I do like his full name, it's very sexy and I don;t really see it as 'Chris' in any interviews.

I don't get the best buds with Jensen either--he seems like a real friendly guy--everyone's his buddy--but he always says his best friend is David, so yeah-where Jensen came from, besides sometimes jamming with his band, I have no idea.

I don't read a lot of J2 fics, but I do once in a while. I haven't read any that had CK in them, but I did just read one that had Tom, and I finally get where you're coming from. Tom's character was written as unintelligent, jealous, and a bully. I didn't get the characterization at all, especially as it didn't need to be Tom for the plot - they could have had an OC tall, dark-haired guy just fine. It was infuriating.

Thank you, thank you! Why folks just don't create an OC to massacre instead of Tom is a mystery to me, because if they have a flaming douchebag named Tom, they have created an OC. It burns me up every single time. My Thomas is *not* an asshole!!

I know--CK is so much more than the singer in the band--he's a damn good actor! And a really great guy, from the interviews I read--sure, everyone's on their best behavior in those things but I feel like it's genuine. Or maybe I'm just goofy when it comes to him! ;)

I have to admit that in one of my J2 AUs I do have him and Jensen being close friends but I kind of needed a certain type of person in the role and he just fit. It's AU it could happen! They're not bff or anything, but he fit so well, especially after I learned some stuff about him later, and I have so much fun with it so I don't care. :P

I do get tired of him being the one that fixes everything or puts up with Jensen's neurotic personality traits. I'm not even sure where those supposed personality traits come form.

Well, I have to confess my pique is entirely personal and kind of petty...I just hate that everyone ignores David. I don't hate that CK is in these stories--I have read stories in which they use him to good effect. And he is hot! :)

I like him but I think he's one of the RPS characters that ends up becoming just a prop or falling into a stereotype.

Stereotypes are what are driving me insane lately. Fandom canon taking a character, running with it until it becomes 'canon.' It's driving me insane.

I agree with you but this is nothing new, the fandoms is always doing this. But I guess that you being so mad is what a lot of readers feels when they read a Smallville Fic and find a completely different Clark, most of the writers seem to hate Clark Kent and adore Lex Luthor but that is not the problem. Clark is always the idiot, hard headed, disloyal, , egotistical liar and almost mental retard who gets Lex into troubles. And Lex apparently gets good reason (almost always Clark is responsible or a SOB with it) for becoming a villian.

What you say about screwing up Christian Kane is true but everyone is free to do as they please. I read those J2 fics and don't really care for anyone else just for J2.

Being annoyed, and being mad is a little different I think, but saying that, I have to disagree strongly that most writers hate Clark. I can point out a lot of fic that paint them both in a positive light, and I prefer fic that does.

What annoys me about the way Christian Kane and other CW actors are written is that the writers seem to depend on stereotypes exclusively. It's like they don't know that Michael is not really bald, or that Thomas is a total gentleman in every sense of the word, or that Christian is an excellent actor as well as singer and in fact is a former CW (or WB) actor (Angel). Though, like you say, everyone is free to do as they please. Just because *I* don't like the way they portray a certain actor doesn't ruin the fic for me, if the writing is good, I'm more than happy to keep on reading!

I posted a rant about the way Michael is portrayed in J2 fics and got shouted down by the SPN fans on my flist :(

Still, I will be rectifying all these errors with my epic RPF Bigbang fic! Christian isn't in it but I will show people how Tom and Michael are supposed to be damnit!

WHAT!! Seriously? In what way could they defend the treatment? I think if you're going to write an actor, you should at least do a little research, watch an interview or two. I'm perfectly willing to go along with the idea of Michael being a guy with low impulse control and a love of acting a fool--but the important word here is *ACTING*. Portraying him as a dummy is lazy writing.

I know they are friends but he so often refers to David Boreanaz as his best friend. I get that you need to tweak characters for the stories, though. Most times it works for me as a reader but sometimes it throws me out of the fic.
