Roxy, just a thought here...but these 2 haven't been together sexually in over 10 years. Perhaps your "problem" isn't such a problem after all. False starts are bound to happen with the history of worry, hurt and doubt. Eventually they'll make it past this, but why not have them struggle with their feelings for the first go round?
See, really that would be the realistic and logical thing to do, but I always get impatient when I come in sight of the end of a story. Another worry I had was, even though my story abounds in cliche, I thought an extended courtship would be one cliche too many...but dang. Hmmmm. Thinking hard--but positive thinking! *g*
