I'm not sure how I feel about his willingness to kill Lionel after Lana confessed that he made her marry Lex. It seemed especially jarring.

I've given up trying to see coherent characterization, so maybe I shouldn't cry foul here, but... eh. What did you think? Did it make sense?

Well...he's young, he's thinking with his crotch...he didn't become Supes in original canon 'til he was about thirty--by that time he had good control, I'm sure. He's a good kid--he's just not Superman yet.

It was quick, but not an election. Last episode, the previous Senator was killed by Helo from Battlestar Galactica (and how many people can say they died twice on Smallville). When Senators die or become incapacitated, the Governor gets to appoint someone to fill out the rest of their term, and Lionel talked the Governor into appointing Martha (except I think he said the governor was a he, and the governor of Kansas is a she--Smallville, where fact checking is something that happens to other people).
