Dear people who write J2,

I love your stories, I really do. I love when you use the entire roster of CW stars, past and present. (yes, some of those folks no longer work for the CW). But let us get some things straight. Mr. Tom Welling has green eyes. Not blue. Superman has blue eyes. Thomas has green eyes, and they are as pretty, if not more, than Jensen's. G-R-E-E-N. Stop making them blue!!

He's almost as tall as Jared; he is taller than Jensen, so much taller that it makes me think they're fudging when they give JA's height as 6'1". He's built more along the line of JP, but with real muscles, less gay porn and more just naturally hot as the sun. *koff*

I understand the need for a villain in most of your stories, but I think that it's becoming fanon in J2 that Thomas is a dick. Sorry, that's not true. Nearly every interview with his co-stars, or article about Thomas, mentions what a nice guy he is, genuinely a nice guy. There's a shit-ton of pics on line with Thomas and kids, and he always looks happy to be in the shot with them--you know, nice to his fans. He's the real deal. The very very *very* few stories I've read in which Thomas is not an abusive asshole bastard pick up on that and more importantly, give him credit for being smart as well as sweet.

I don't know, just feeling oddly protective about my Thomas and Clark lately. I just needed to get that out. I hate what folks do with Thomas, and hate how they waste him in fics. I'd like to read *something* where he figures as large as Christian Kane and gets decent treatment. (by the way, where's the Chris/David fic, fer cryin' out loud?
*deep breath*

Next time, I'm going to talk about what they do to Michael in these stories. You might want to step back from the screen when I do.

;)

Hee! I actually take it as something of a badge of honor. Sort of like when James Marsters said that there's this natural inbuilt feeling that people who are that pretty can't be smart — but Tom is. I figure it works the same way. There has to be something wrong with our Thomas. If he's that pretty, he can't possibly be nice. Or smart. And if he is that nice and smart and pretty, then... why isn't he the hero of the story?

Gotta have flaws so that there's conflict. Otherwise it's just Jensen and Tom playing golf and being nice to each other. Which might be reality, but it makes for crappy fic.

If I were to ever write J2, I'd envision Tom's place as off to the side, being quietly amused at the shenanigans and making dry-as-dust asides to the audience. Sort of like a Greek-god chorus. :-)

The blue eyes, though, that's just annoying.

Now *that* I could definitely live with, and in fact, in one fic I read that was pretty much his function--that, and keeping Jensen's ego under control. I thought it worked really well.

LOL! I think you just pointed out why I'd fail so hard at RPS.

Right? I mean, come on--there's just no excuse for that!

Most of the times, real people as villains make me uncomfortable unless the writer sells it hard. And I can see wanting to take on that challenge, turning someone we "know" into a monster. But this just shoving someone into the role of random asshole out of nowhere--don't like that much.

This really made me giggle. Incorrect details like that in fic make me crazy, too!

**pets you** I know you love your Thomas. I never make him the bad guy in fic I just make Lois move to Gotham so Clark (and Tom) can live happily ever after with Lex (and Michael.) :D :D

But seriously, it's true. Everything I've ever read gives proof that Tom is a great person and so it's kinda wrong and mean to make him a bad guy. :\ I'm sorry people do that and it upsets you. :( I'm equally as defensive when it comes to Bale.

And oh Lordy, I have popcorn ready for when your rant about how people treat Rosenbaum is posted. :D

Heeeeeeee! You're the kindest person ever!

I mean, I know it's RPS and that makes it unreal and AU right from the get, but even if they made him at least an interesting bad guy, then I'd be slighlty less GRRR about it, you know?

I think in J2, it's just that people have seen pictures and heard the name, but not much more than that. Thomas is a big wheel on the CW, and the fact that Jensen was on the show for a season makes Thomas a logical choice to toss into J2s.
And all the rest of it is lazy writing as far as I'm concerned.

And damn right he's amazing! :)

i'll look forward to that rant!

i've only written rps in one fandom, and i was careful to treat the people carefully and with respect. come to think of it, i need to write some more of it, because one guy in particular is enormously fun to write. but i'd never demonize anyone in the way you're describing.

It's not even that they demonize him...it's as if they don't get that there's a real person out there. I mean, I'm working on a J2 in which everybody *but* Michael is a horrible asshole, at least as far as I'm concerned. I could handle Thomas being the bad guy if he was more than a cardboard cut-out of a villain, y'know? You can make them the bad guy and still show respect, I think. ;)

Yeah, Tom as a villain is a bit cliche I agree. And Micheal as the batshit crazy one. Honestly, in some of those fics I'm surprised he's not loncked up in an institution. Though since Misha appeared some of the character-craziness has been transfered.

Heh. I was actually just talking to Ash about the asshole factor.

It's funny, Jensen is my guy, and I absolutely friggin' LOVE it when he's an asshole in fic. It just does something for me. Of course, he can come off as kind of an asshole at cons and stuff too, I think, but him being a dink in a fic is just a world of win for me. So hot.

I read one once, where Jensen is a douche, and he keeps letting Tom suck his dick, and then hooks up with Jared, and Tom and Jared are nice guys, and it was pretty awesome :)

7/12/10 08:30 pm (UTC)

I actually have no problem seeing Jensen as an asshole, and I like him--like, a *LOT*.

Still, I don't think it's much of a stretch to make him one. And yes, I enjoy asshole Jensen fics, as long as he comes around eventually. Even so, in most of those kind of fics, it still feels Jensen to me, asshole or not. I feel the same way about Jared--I have no problem with him being a borderline asshole either. It's just--these folks who write asshole Thomas have never seen him in action. There's just nothing about him that makes it a viable characterization. And just making someone a douche because you need a douche...naw.

It pisses me off the same it pisses me off when folks write Jensen as a girl with balls. Why? There's nothing feminine about the guy. He's pretty, but he's not girly. *shrug* Maybe I'm just picky and crabby. *G*

Also, I wanna know what fic is the Asshole!Jensen fic?

I'm okay with Tom being a bad guy but the fact that most of the time the fic just make him seem so one dimensional drives me up the wall. When you make him the villain of the story at least make sure that he's still recognizable as Tom!

I was just thinking about this today, because I've been reading a J2 fic where both Tom and Michael are sociopaths. It was actually a good story, and their characters weren't completely horrible - they both cared for Jensen like a little brother. It also had O'Toole, Glover, and Schneider in it (Schneider also turned out to be a bad guy). There were other names, but I didn't recognize them (except for Kripke - and he was a bad guy as well).

Anyway, this is an issue that bothers me as well. I just don't get it - unless it has something to do with SpN fans catching glimpses of their TV characters and transferring that to their real personalities. I'm mean, Lex is the arch-nemesis and Clark isn't always at his most stellar in SV.

Still, this brutalization of Tom and Michael's characters seems pretty consistent. I was even thinking of bringing it up as my one complaint of this person's fic - as an aside more than anything else, but I still haven't made up my mind.

This particular one wasn't as bad as those that just pick one of our boys to use badly, when it could be an Joe out there.

Why don't they use other people from their own fandom...or other CW shows? Why our SV boys? That's what I really don't get. For douches on SpN - you have the character that played Uriel, Zachariah, YED, Aziezel (sp?), and from the last season Brady (go him) and maybe even Crowley. I'm sure there are others that I've forgotten because I've only seen each ep once.

That would make more sense, because the SpN fans would be familiar with those characters. There are probably many SpN fans who have no clue who TW and MR are. It is definitely a mystery to me.

Oh - Jeff Morgan is the exception - I often see him being treated as a douche or brutal in J2 fics.

Also - I look forward to your post on Michael. I'll be cheering you on again...and you say stuff much better than me, so you've saved me a post on this topic. It really is maddening (the J2 thing - not you *g*)

*G*

I don't think they even base these characters on the boys at all. I think it's just I need an asshole or a drugged up maniac, and they shoehorn the guys into those roles with no understanding at all of who they are. If they want Thomas to be the bad guy, then for gods sake give us a reason why he is, or make him interesting at least.

As for not using those fellows you mentioned, it could be that some of the stuff we're reading is before those characters came about? In the early seasons, it pretty much was just Jensen and Jared.

Maybe...maybe it's jealousy, because they know that Thomas is just as beautiful as Jensen? *eg*

pssst: was that story a spy AU?
